(Special.) The dlHtrict conference of the La Grande dUtrlct of the Methodist Episcopal church, met for its fourth session In Haines, Mny 12, .adjourning on the evening of the 14th. Owing to sick ness there were but 10 of the minis terial members present, as follows: Tresldlng Elder J. D. Glllllan, pastor of the charge; P. L. Johnson, J. Fin ger of Baker City; .C. D. Fawcett Huntington; C. F. Wheeler, secretary, Vale; R. W, Curry, Cove; A. F. Kline. Summervllle; A. L. Howarth, Joseph; Henry Martin, flora; J. D. Bird, Wal lowa, and J. E. Carver, Nyssa. F. M. Jasper was recommended to the annual conference for admission on trial; A. L. Howarth and J. E. Oar vcr were recommended for deacon's orders and. the licenses of J. W, Mack, T. A. L. Howarth addressed a large evening assembly on "Reform," and Rev. J. E. Garver, formerly an attor ney, did likewise on the subject of "Enforcement of Anti-Liquor Laws." Rev. J. Finger read an Instructive and Interesting paper on the "Rela tion of the Pulpit to Civic Reform," In the recent campaign against vice and non-observance of law In his town, he has had some experience which makes him able to speak with authority. !
