Tired of living and disappointed be cause she wua not permitted to keep an, ensngomont with some yourg peo T'.e, Bessie Palmer, a 16-year-old charge of the Boys' and Girls' Aid so ciety, who had been ' placed In the home of a well to do family In Irv (ngton. attempted suicide by taking carbolic acid Monday night while in a hysterical f'.t ' The girl, who was given Into the care of this fnmlly about six months ago, was regarded as having obtained an exceptionally good home, but this Is now forfeited, as the head of the family refuses to receive her In the house again. The bottlo containing the poison that the girl attempted to swallow. was found by her In a coset. She had asked permission to go out after supper ,to Join some companions and soon after It had been denied, the peo ple In the house were aroured by a commotion In this closet where they found the girl with her Hps burned by the acid. The family telephoned to V. T. Gardner, superintendent of the. society, who took the girl to the horpitnl. She la now very penttent and for some tlnie to come will be cqnfined to tho home of the society. Mis3 Palmer was committed to tho home, by the Juvenile court one year ago. Her father and mother live In Cnlon county and were adjudged un fit persons to tm uuuUu t. Ili "hr care. Since taken away from her mother she is said to have been most unhappy, and during the past year in the society home has been treated twice by a physician for hysteria. Once when out with other girls of the so clety for an outing In the City park, she fell dbwn and refused to move. She. had to be carried back to the home. The attempt on her life Is re garded at the society as a "fake." The officials there seem to be of the. opin ion that It was an effort of the girl to enlist the sympathy of the family and through this means gain her own way. Oregonian. To Hero for Oil.
