' The dedication of the St. Franclg do Sales cathedral took place this morn ing and the services were attended by hundreds of people, the large church being crowded to Its seating capacity. A large delegation came up from La Crande nml Pendleton and severs! utlirrs were In attendance from other parts of Oregon, Idaho and Washing ton. O'ltillly, L. D., who sprinkled loly water upon the sidewalk and iteps, and blessed the exterior and In terior walls, while the psalms and litany were chanted by the clergy. After these services the church was nnn oH th rlprv and neonle en tered. The most solemn and beauti ful pontifical high mass ever ob served in thlB city was celebrated by Bishop O'Dea of Seattle. The sermon was a masterful discourse on the dig nity of the apostolic and episcopal of fice and was delivered by Archbishop Christie of Portland. The services continued until 12 o'clock and the beauty and solemnity of the occasion held the large audience until .the close of the service. The musical program last evening was even more brilliant and Interest ing than It was at the morning serv ice, for most of the singing was solo work, which was. very fine. The beautiful cathedral stands as a monument to the untiling Industry and zeal of Bishop O'Reilly, who took ?narge or tno work lour years ago this coming fall, being the first In cumbent of the See. The cost of the building will run upwards it $50,009 nml praise to Bishop O'Reil ly, there is not a cent of Indebtedness on it. The structure Is built of native stone, Is 140 feet long, 68 feet wide In the main and 50 feet in the nave. The height of the towers Is 114 fort, and from t:.e floor- to the celling in the In terior is 42 feet. The seats are made of oak, and the seating capacity is 550. The enrichments are of antique oak, while there Is a large amount of Jecorutlons of white plastic work. The windows are of beautiful cathe lral glass, giving a soft light and beautiful tint to the Interior. The building Is heated by steam and light, id by gas and electricity.
