charge of the Boys' and Girls' Aid so
ciety, who had been ' placed In the
home of a well to do family In Irv
(ngton. attempted suicide by taking
carbolic acid Monday night while in a
hysterical f'.t ' The girl, who was
given Into the care of this fnmlly
about six months ago, was regarded
as having obtained an exceptionally
good home, but this Is now forfeited,
as the head of the family refuses to
receive her In the house again.

that the girl attempted to swallow.
was found by her In a coset. She
had asked permission to go out after
supper ,to Join some companions and
soon after It had been denied, the peo
ple In the house were aroured by a
commotion In this closet where they
found the girl with her Hps burned
by the acid. The family telephoned
to V. T. Gardner, superintendent of
the. society, who took the girl to the
horpitnl. She la now very penttent
and for some tlnie to come will be
cqnfined to tho home of the society.
Mis3 Palmer was committed to tho
home, by the Juvenile court one year
ago. Her father and mother live In
Cnlon county and were adjudged un
fit persons to tm uuuUu t. Ili "hr
care. Since taken away from her
mother she is said to have been most
unhappy, and during the past year in
the society home has been treated
twice by a physician for hysteria. Once
when out with other girls of the so
clety for an outing In the City park,
she fell dbwn and refused to move.
She. had to be carried back to the
home. The attempt on her life Is re
garded at the society as a "fake." The
officials there seem to be of the. opin
ion that It was an effort of the girl
to enlist the sympathy of the family
and through this means gain her own

The trustees of the Blue Mountain
Oil company have received the prom
ise of Prof. Samuel Aughey, an oil
expert operating on the Pacific coast.
to visit walla walla and Dixie on
April IS, and make a special examin
ation for the purpose of locating the
exact point where the first oil well
shall be drilled. The company will at
once set to work to bore the well and
prospect its oil properties, and have
the assurances of Prof. Aughey that
the prospects of getting oil in large
quantities are especially good. The
realization of these prospects means
the establishment of a new Industry
that will be worth many dollars to
Walla Walla and Dixie. Walla Walla
