BEAN, La Meets Barney Milady, an old man who had been employed aa watch at Rum ble A McCullys sawmill, about six miles below the Wallowa bridge, was found dead last Friday morning In a mall ditch about one mile above the mill, aaya the Elgin Recorder. The old man had gone from the mill to the Canyon hotel on the night of March 8th, for supplies, and atayed at. the hotel that night, leaving early the next morning for the mill with a sack load of supplies thrown across his back, and was seen about 1 o'clock that afternoon about two mllea be low the fish hatchery by John Fisher and wife. Bo far aa can be ascer tained, that was tha last time he was seen alive, and nothing Was known of him until found last Friday morning by John Fisher and others who had started down to tha mill for lumber. When within about one mile of the mill Mr, Fisher and friends found the body of the old man lying In a ditch, face downward. Fisher Immediately went to the Canyon house and noti fied the company of his death, and they In turn" notified the coroner of Wallowa county, who Impanelled Jury and proceeded to tha place where ,the unfortunate victim had been found. After looking over the ground It was decided not to hold an Inquest, aa It was evident that the man had met death by drowning, all clr cumstances pointing to that fact. Close to the man was an empty whis ky flask and it Is thought that the un fortunate Imbibed too freely and had fallen Into the ditch In a helpless condition and was unable to get out. The ditch was small and the water was so shallow that a portion of his heart emergod above the surface. The unfortunate had evidently emptied the bottle at that point while on his way to the mill with his supplies and top pled Into the ditch In a drunken con dition. Although the body had been In the ditch for 13 days, It was in an almost perfect state. The remains were prepared for burial at the Canyon hotel and con veyed to the Joseph cemetery, where they were Interred Sunday, and where he said some time ago that he wanted to be laid to rest. The party consisted of J. H. O'Nell. traveling passenger agent of Port land; R. B. Mills, general freight agent, also of Portland, and Messrs. Burns and Calderhead of Walla Walla. While the officials of the Harrlman line were reticent aa to the object of their visit, tha rumor has gotten abroad that they were looking Into tha feasibility of making cut-off be tween here and Weaton. Should this be tha case they would likely aban don the present route on Dry creek, and run from the trestle across the Tumalum southerly through the east ern portion of Milton, Survey of this route were made' aeveral years ago, and found to be practicable. The New Books. . It Is safe to declare, with a very small mental reservation, that every one likes a love story, and that "all the world lovea a- lover." But love stories are suffering from a sameness of plot, a monotonous repetition of the first meeting, of the Inevitable misunderstanding, the same miracu lous reconciliation; and the living hap pily ever afterward. "In Pursuit of Priscllla" Is a love story, one of the very latest to be told us In print. Strange to say, there Is no quarrel, not even a first meeting recorded; the two men and the girl actively; the dog and the auto pas sively. The sub-title of the book is "The Man Willing and the Woman Willful." But Priscllla Is not so very willful after all, for didn't she say In the end, "And, Billy" "Yes. dear?" "I hope you didn't think I was going to England without you."
