LAUNDRY TELEPHONE MAIN 7 City of Mexico, March 1 J. When tne American battleship fleet under Admiral Evans arrived at Magdalena Bay yesterday to begla Its target prac tice, the officers and sailors found awaiting thera a city that has almost literally sprung up In a night. By declaration ef the Mexican govern ment, Magdulena Bay is now a port of entry and Senor N. Rafael Castro Mon- tano has been made captain of the port and administrator of the cus toms house. , Until recently only a few scattered hovels comprised the "town" of Mag dalena Bay. With the news that 15, 000 men of the American fleet would make a stay of three weeks there, the Mexican commercial houses scented aa opportunity for trade and barter that would likely be Immensely profitable. Temporary structures went up by the scores and a few permanent buildings have been erected. Salesmen and stocks of gosds of all kinds have feeea sent t the new city ana u i now In readiness to supply Jack with anything he may desire, and, Inciden tally to separate him from his cola. In the wake of legitimate business enterprises, many of the outcasts, gamblers a a1 dive-keepers of this and other Mexican cities have flocked to Magdalena City, and the men and women who prey upon humanity for subsistence will be there In large numbers ta greet the sailors. In 'the character of its buildings and business enterprises, Magdalena City now bears a close resemblance to Coney Island, remodeled along Spanish-American lines. Tamale stands, I dance halls, chile con came "parlors" I and saloons Jack will find in sound- an'ce, as well as the' inevitable arena j for bull fights. The new municipality lies In a valley of the coast range of Baja California, where the mountains come down to the sea. The bay Is large enough to anchor a whole navy, being In reality an inland aea formed by Magdalena, Santa Margarita, Cre dent and other Islands. The American navy department has made arrangements to ship large food supplies to the fleet at Magdalena Buy. as .Magdalena City is now a port of entry it will not be necessary for ves sels to clear for Ensenada and have their cargoes thence sent to Magdnlena Bay. The contracts Include 350,000 pountlH of flour, 200,000 pounds of fresh beef, 15,000 pounds of frankfur ters and 3000 pounds of condensed milk. ( The many sharks of the bay take. almost any kind of bait, and it Is rare ly that a warship Is at anchor with out from one to a half dozen lines dangling over its stern. Watching a shark line is a tedious business, but it Is strictly necessary In order for the fisherman to know when the monster is hooked, as his frantic rushes, If allowed to go unchecked, are pretty sure to cause some part of the line, leader, or even some of his own anat omy to give way and result In his es cape. The old scheme of tying the line around the big toe and going to sleep would probably work all right as far as rousing the fisherman Is concerned;" J-4mt the sequel might not leave him In condition to give the shark the Im mediate attention necessary. To this end the officers and sailors have hit on an Ingenious plan. Instead of tak ing In their lines when the dinner gong sounds, or when for any other reason they are on ' duty elsewhere, they run a stout piece of martin twine from the shark line up to the steam whistle, leaving It for the man eater himself to announce the event of his being hooked by sounding a toot. ' The Indians of this district are of a physique considerably superior to those of the mainland of Mexico and the Colorado river delta country, but still far Inferior to the , magnificent Serl of Tlburon Inland, whom they re semble slightly. Unlike most, of their brethren of Lower California, they live largely by hunting and flatting, and pay little attention to agricultural pursuits. Their original weapon was the bow, which they stm handle with great proflcency, but in the last ' de cade or two a number of old rifles have fallen Into their hands, and upon these they now place most of their -dependence In hunting. They are poor shots, bnt wonderful stalkers, and an Indian with ammanitlon never goes hungry. WANTED To rent, Smith-Premier typewriter; must be In geed condi tion.
