WISH BEn FIELDS 10 MORE dAMES HERE (e clr e rtls- econ-k.N. The question of German laborers in the beet fields of the west is meeting with much favorable comment. In the Grande Ronde valley, the sugar beet promoters are thinking seriously of bringing a German colony here from Wallowa county. A special from Star, Idaho, deals with the labor problem thus: Hon. Mark Austin, the real brain power behind the sugar industry in this entire region, made a speech here Tuesday night to the Commercial club and many farmers and their wives In which he declared that sum mer fallowing is an Indlspensible ad junct to successful beet raising. After a careful, and sometimes personal ex amlnatlon of all tha soils in Boise valley he is more and more deter mined that farmers shall understand that he insists upon the proper prep aration of the land on which beets are raised. He cited three points that must be followed as' far as It is possible for man to do so; a beet season furnished by nature, the proper kind of prepara tion of the right kind of soil and the legitimate energy expended thereaf ter In the shape of decent cultivation. He said nature would give us seven seasons out of eight of the kind suit ed for beets and there Is nothing to prevent man from having the Other two points every time. He was su prised to find that not half tl ireiis of the upper Boise valley hi ever been plowed, the alfalfa havli been planted without stirring the s :lt all. He wants beet ground to fini 'y be loosened up to a depth of ev server more than 10 Inches. He wants cro 'enlng, rotated until beets get the ground t month, years out of three or else a good s ' tern of fertilization adopted and mat tallied. nr. Austin sain: wow x tell y open and above board, fair and squat want this valley to grow beets, i are willing to meet you more ttnf half way In showing you what J learned about the growing bustned We know what wo are talking aboui This valley Is good for the beet cu' lure. We decided this before we mat up our minds to put a million dollai into the plunt at Nampa. This vallt! Is hardly second-class In this respe" to any valley In the known world. j course, you have some soils here t. which It Is folly to plant beets und this kind we must light clear. Pel, your soils that will grow the arttc put your seeds In the ground In way that they will have a chance a then give them that chance and y win ue rewarded with a profltalj crop." He spoke of bringing In German unrers to iarm tne beets for t innencr. stating that this labor vvi much more reliable than the Japs a tnai tne valley got a good cltlzi whenever a German took tip his ho here. Said the sugar company v ready to bring In all of this sort labor the valley would ever need the company would meet the peo more than half way on any plan til would give the sugar beet an oppd tunlty to show what it could do this, one of the most beautiful call In all his travels. He showed statistics to prove thl mm Bt-uson was an "orr year ever where In the United States. He to' how the Japs' had done poor work many instances and brought out t mci mat no lun.ls In this entire v.V ley were properly prepared the ye before, and once mure emphasized t fact that all soils In all places years, must be gardened for tho bt and not "ranched" by trusting to w ter to do the business. He said th! iabor Is one of the finest things which to make an Investment imagl In nsmuch as a man knows I From all appearances the basket ball season Is over In La Grande, both In the boys' and girls' department Manager Lulu Gulling has been work' lng for several days to arrange a game with some team west of the mountains, other than Walla Walla, ! but has failed thus far. In order to play the Garden City girls' team it is necessary that a double header of some sort be arranged, as Walla Walla emphatically refuses to bear the ex pense of bringing the La Grande girls to Walla Walla alone. If Pendleton can be persuaded to play off the tie games, thus bringing the team part way to Walla Walla, the latter school will be willing to bear expenses of me lettiu iiip to Walla V.'alla cr. the evening following the game at Pendleton. Weston Normal has dis banded Its girls' team, hence Pendleton Is the only solution. It Is not believed a game can be arranged with that team. The girls' team has been a success ful one the past season. Only one de feat was suffered and that on a tie game. The Hjh school girls went down In de.tut before them, and Pen dleton once, hence the majority of games won by the club girls Is two to one.
