The question of German laborers in
the beet fields of the west is meeting
with much favorable comment. In
the Grande Ronde valley, the sugar
beet promoters are thinking seriously
of bringing a German colony here
from Wallowa county. A special from
Star, Idaho, deals with the labor
problem thus:
Hon. Mark Austin, the real brain
power behind the sugar industry in
this entire region, made a speech
here Tuesday night to the Commercial
club and many farmers and their
wives In which he declared that sum
mer fallowing is an Indlspensible ad
junct to successful beet raising. After
a careful, and sometimes personal ex
amlnatlon of all tha soils in Boise
valley he is more and more deter
mined that farmers shall understand
that he insists upon the proper prep
aration of the land on which beets
are raised.
He cited three points that must be
followed as' far as It is possible for
man to do so; a beet season furnished
by nature, the proper kind of prepara
tion of the right kind of soil and the
legitimate energy expended thereaf
ter In the shape of decent cultivation.
He said nature would give us seven
seasons out of eight of the kind suit
ed for beets and there Is nothing to
prevent man from having the Other
two points every time. He was su
prised to find that not half tl
ireiis of the upper Boise valley hi
ever been plowed, the alfalfa havli
been planted without stirring the s
:lt all. He wants beet ground to fini
'y be loosened up to a depth of ev server
more than 10 Inches. He wants cro 'enlng,
rotated until beets get the ground t month,
years out of three or else a good s '
tern of fertilization adopted and mat
tallied.
nr. Austin sain: wow x tell y

this kind we must light clear. Pel,

He spoke of bringing In German
unrers to iarm tne beets for t
innencr. stating that this labor vvi
much more reliable than the Japs a
tnai tne valley got a good cltlzi

In the boys' and girls' department
Manager Lulu Gulling has been work'
lng for several days to arrange a
game with some team west of the
mountains, other than Walla Walla, !
but has failed thus far. In order to
play the Garden City girls' team it is
necessary that a double header of
some sort be arranged, as Walla Walla
emphatically refuses to bear the ex
pense of bringing the La Grande girls
to Walla Walla alone. If Pendleton
can be persuaded to play off the tie
games, thus bringing the team part
way to Walla Walla, the latter school
will be willing to bear expenses of

the evening following the game at
Pendleton. Weston Normal has dis
banded Its girls' team, hence Pendleton
Is the only solution. It Is not believed
a game can be arranged with that
team.
The girls' team has been a success
ful one the past season. Only one de
feat was suffered and that on a tie
game. The Hjh school girls went
down In de.tut before them, and Pen
dleton once, hence the majority of
games won by the club girls Is two to
one.
