John Barrett who has rece ntly been requested to assume th direction of the Bureau of American Republics, spoke at Assembly Wednesday. - He gave a graphic picture of the resources of th twelve South American republics. . Brazil he said, is larger than th U.S. The Amazon drains a valley five times as big as does the Mississippi. Great ships as cend it more than 1 000 mile. Its capi tal has 1,000,000 people, spends more on civic improvement than does New York. Buenos Ayres has 1,100,000 people, baa solved municipal ownership, has free doctors and lawyers for the poor, has a newspaper building costing $5,000,000, an opera house worth $6, 000,000, has streets as clean as a floor, : Arrbt;r wl" nr - vmnr exnort more wheat than the U. S. Mr. Barrett told also of th other great Latin repub lics. He asserted that- there are less divorces in South America in ten year than in Chicago in six months.! Then he told ef his recent mission in Columbia, reconciling that republic for the loss of Panama. Finally he spoke of th canal zone', comparing present and former con ditions there. He closed with a state ment of the commercial value of South America to the U. S , and the assertion that the Latin republics look to Unsle Sam as a model and should be so treated that they may say; "Big Brother we trust in you."
