Finally they found away whereby they could collect the rates by unloading the freight here. That was no small accommodation for it meant a saving of at least one week in the time of receiving the goods. We have lived under these conditions for the last fifteen or more years and if Spokane wins in her fight, the Inland Empire will save thou sands of dollars. This is a direct saving to the cousumer not to the mercha t. In a general way it matters very little to the dealer what the freight rate is. He is compelled to add it to the cost of the goods. The only thing that interests him is to know that the rate is the same to every dealer. The fight is now on and justice demands that Spokane will be successful. Santa Claus is coming, he will soon be here. Our streets are crowded these days with happy peopie bent on remembering their friends with Christmas tokens. The cry all over the land is "Car short age . it must have some foundation, nevertheless "Car shortage" permits not a few of the roads to cover up not a few short comings. It speaks well for Oregon apples to be selling at 90 cents per dozen in Eastern cities when the Middle and Eastern states are known to be unable to place their stock on the market at anything like re numerative prices. There are so many lonj. light cjlured coats worn these days that the average man has difficulty to pick out his wife when attempting to meet her as prear ranged plans, on the street, to joint'y do some Christmas shopping. i r t.i i 'i M"-li-. the LIU '.o irun ..it- :l.i 'ft.. ' I . Within a very short time the voters of this city will doubtless be called upon to vote whether or not they are in favor nf issuing sufficient bonds to bring in t:ie waters of Beaver Creek fur city purposes. The amount of power that such a project is capable of producing, in addition to the water quesfion, will receive no small con sideration by quite a nuinher of those who will vote upon this matter. I f. r v; The county Good Roads Association can do much for the cause they champion and doubtless will. In the proper season if they would arrange for a county con vention, on lines similar to the one held in this city this week and let our own farm ers and tax payers exchange their views it would result in securing public opinion as to the wishes of those who actually pay the bills.
