YOU WANT TO KNOW j w,& r-c0i IF YOU HAVE A TASTE TOR THE BEST Over at Island City there is something doing in the way of football practice. Re cently the boys of that athletically in clined suburb, organized a football org anization and elected for its manager ,W. H. Spence. "Reddy" Walters is captain and his ability as an athlete places him in a good position to pilot the team and f earnest hard work will do any good toward getting a winning team, a good team is assured. Captain Walters has much old material and with what new men there are that have given their acqui escence to try for the team, he should finally secure a fine team. Waller Parker, who was at right end last year, will be shifted to right half Will Mullenburg will be stationed at left half and James Irwin will also be at his furrn :r position, that of quarter. Capt. Waiters will be seen at full and when this quartet gets to working with unity, it will take a team of no mean ability to stop them. The line up too, is strong this year. Ben Gekler. the "young giant" will use his avoirdupois as center rush. Ed Schwebke and Will Valswinkler will be at right and left guard respectfully. The former is a new man but has already won the con fidence of his team mates. The other guard is a veteran player. RigM and left tackle will be held by Henry and Har mon Stein positions which they held inlast year's team, and where they demonstrat ed that they know the game. At right end Clarence Orton will again be seen, Isaac Schafer, also a former player, will act as left end man. and thus is completed Qan fog obtained at this mar a line-up which is properly practiced and ' coached will be a winner. Donald E. Meyers will coach the boys, a fact that means nothing will be left undone in the way of proper instructions. Utility men will be C. Valswinkler and Alex Robertson. ice cream and water ices in town it's your move our way. For this purpose about a dozen girls of the city have organized a girls' basket ball team and will commence practice as soon as they can secure a suitable hall in which to practice. There are girls enough in the organization to insure two teams. This means that the first team will al ways have an opportunity to get the best possible practice, that of playing against another team. Those who will compose the personnel of the first team are all ex perienced players, having played in high school teams here and in other cities. Girls' basket ball teams are popular in La Grande and ere many weeks, C. M. Rogers, who is to coach the teams, thinks he can pick five from the squad who will make a winning toam. They will play matched games between themselves un til the game and all its fine points have been thoroughly mastered and after that a schedule will be played with teams of other cities. FOOTBALL MEETING TOMORROW Tomorrow at three o'clock is the hour set for all lovers of foot ball, whether or not they intend to play, to be present at a meeting in the Commercial club of all persons so inclined. The matterof organ ization will be taken up and the prospects for a tejm discussed. A large attendance will mean much for the team's prospects. If it gets started off with a burst of en thusiasm, it will last. Let every football enthusiast be present to start a ball roll ing, Ahioh after it has ceased to revolve, will h ive tacked to it pennants galore. NO HIGH SCHOOL TEAM If the pteser.t status of high school football is a criterion there will be no regular toam in La Grande high school this year. The reason for this, is not a want of interest by either students or the school faculty, hut, because the total In aw n Hi.it could be donned in uniforms would not total enr.njh to make a "kids" team. With one cr t .) cx:eitions. the hovs on the high cch ol ure all little fellows who d not rn.iko valuable material for a foot hall tjin. However it is si possible, even at this late hour, that some thing will he done towards turning out a team. Several of Ust year's players are in school and the pessimistic spirit that seems to prevail the football aggregation I of the present time may lift for a bright- I er outlook. at all times.
