Webster was then a young man twenty-seven years of age, and enthusiastically went on the stump lecturing in favor of a simplified ortho graphy but like so many who since his day have attempted to stir an inconsiderate public to realize the advantages of reform he found it useless to continue the work Later, when preparing his famous dict ionary he innovated few rectifications in the spelling dropping the superfluous "iT in such words as "flavor," "harbor." etc. and changing the old " tre" in words of the class of "theatre" "metre" etc. to "ter." .
