Refreshing Diinks To suit the Weather at SGHEtiRER'S Its always Summer Time with us Candies, iuts, Cigars and Tobacco Every reader of the La Grande weekly Observer and the La Grande Evenins Observer will receive a copy of the Observer's Industrial Edition and rwe desire to impress upon every subscriber the advantage of sending this edition to ome distant friend, whom you think could better their condition by moving to Union county. If such is done tt will secure an added circulation that will necessanlly bring about the results that we all are striving to obtain, increased population. This county is capable of sustainina a population of fifty thousand and the sooner this is accomplished the greater will be our permanentprosperity. Meas ured from eny standard of compares n you may. our present population of 20, 000 is second to no county in the state or in the entire Nortewest, but we have tne natural resources to support more than twice our present population. Every additional family that comes here and makes a success adds just that much more, and after a careful reading of this edition, we know thai you can add a few i.nes when sending it as a testimonial to the truthfulness of the statements con tainea and with a realization that when your friends come they will have no cause of complaint from the fact that j the literature you sent them was a mis- ' representation in any particu'ar. The j facts concerning Union county insuffici ent. They do not have to be tclstered up orthe imagination drawn upon u make it appear that this is an idea! place to se cure a Home in all that the t-.rm. home implies. There are 24.258 miles of public road in the state of Oregon, of which 2235 miles are surfaced with gravel. 209 miles with stone and 145 miles with plank making a total of 2583 miles of improved road. It will be seen from these figures that hint 7 1 pr rent of the roads have I been improved. By comparing the total, j road mileage with the area of the state it I appears that there was about 35-100 of j a mile of public road per square mile of area. A comparison of mileage with popula tion shows that there was one mile of rjad to -every 12 inhabitants, but only one mile of improved road to every 150 inhabitants. Prohibition is the leading issue in the Maine election today. Maine has been nominally a prohibition state for half a century and naturally the entire country s more or less interested in the outcome ' of todays election, as it will show the I tremd of public opinion on this great question. Today our public schools in this city opened as well as in many other dis tricts." Union county is certainly very liberal in the matter of schools. Last year over $100,000 was paid out for the education of our children, of this amount $43,000 was paid to teachers. Quite a payroll in itself. The mjlk w II hold the powder in solution, but the cement, being heavy, will sink to the bottom. So it is necessary to keeo themiiture well stirred up with a paddle while applying it; and, as its efficiency depends upon administer ing a good coating of cement, it is not safe to trust its application to untrust worthy'.hands. Six hours after applying, this paint willjbe immovable and unaffect ed bywater as smocth-o,d paint We have known of buildings twenty year o'd in which the wocd is woll preserved by it." This is one of the best musical in stitutions in the state, and that people in this city and valley are begininng todiscover the advantage of this school. The system is the latest and most practical, and in cludes all the latest discoveries in the art of teaching music. The school is divided into two depart ments; No. 1 is for beginners from 6 years or more and are taught the first three grades. Pupils come one hour each day. This is no kin dergarten system but far superior. In No. 2 the grades are from 3 to 15. Here they graduate. Pupils take one or two lessons a week as they desire. No scholars will be permitted to remain in this school who do not study. Opposite the Foley House over the candy store. Phone. 473. PALMER H0USEI JOHN PALMER. Prop. Firstclass accommodations.
