There are 24.258 miles of public road
in the state of Oregon, of which 2235
miles are surfaced with gravel. 209 miles
with stone and 145 miles with plank
making a total of 2583 miles of improved
road.
It will be seen from these figures that
hint 7 1 pr rent of the roads have I
been improved. By comparing the total, j
road mileage with the area of the state it I
appears that there was about 35-100 of j
a mile of public road per square mile of
area.
A comparison of mileage with popula
tion shows that there was one mile of
rjad to -every 12 inhabitants, but only
one mile of improved road to every 150
inhabitants.
Prohibition is the leading issue in the
Maine election today. Maine has been
nominally a prohibition state for half a
century and naturally the entire country
s more or less interested in the outcome '
of todays election, as it will show the I
tremd of public opinion on this great
question.
Today our public schools in this city
opened as well as in many other dis
tricts." Union county is certainly very
liberal in the matter of schools. Last
year over $100,000 was paid out for
the education of our children, of this
amount $43,000 was paid to teachers.

farm buildings; "Stir into a gallon of
milk about three pounds of Portland
cement, and adj sufficient Venetian red
or any other colored paint powder to give
a good color. The mjlk w II hold the
powder in solution, but the cement, being
heavy, will sink to the bottom. So it is
necessary to keeo themiiture well stirred
up with a paddle while applying it; and,
as its efficiency depends upon administer
ing a good coating of cement, it is not
safe to trust its application to untrust

This is one of the best musical in
stitutions in the state, and that
people in this city and valley are
begininng todiscover the advantage

latest and most practical, and in
cludes all the latest discoveries in

school is divided into two depart
ments; No. 1 is for beginners from
6 years or more and are taught
the first three grades. Pupils come
one hour each day. This is no kin
dergarten system but far superior.
