Next in importance to removing the cause of zny disease is the condition in which the system is left after a course of medical treatment. Medicines containing mercury potash or other strong mineral in;pe.;ien!s often do permanent injury by eating out the delicate lining and tissues of the stomach, producing chronic dyspepsia, unfavorably affecting the Uiwels and so damaging the system thut even if the original cause of the disease has been removed, it is left in such a deranged and weakened condition that the health is permanently impaired. SOCIETY I Yesterday afternoon Mrs. Roszell gave 1 a pleasant little party in her home in honor of het daughter, Mrs. H. A. Mr. Clay with a crew of men was lifting the heavy rails to a flat car when one of the rails already on the car fell off. Mr. Clay stepped aside far enough to get his body out of the way but not quick enough to save his hand. The heavy rail caught the fingers in some peculiar manner bending them backwards. The member was also badly cut and bruised. He was brought to this city on a freight where doctors Bacon and Hall dressed the bruises. Wdlla Walla-fort Doomed . "I recommended the abandonment of Fort Walla Waila two years ago, but owing to local pressure on the govern ment tne post was retained. Sine then new barracks have been built. I do not think it likely that the government will dispose of its present quarters at Walla Walla, but when you speak of a brigade post 1 can positively state that such a thing is altogether out of the question." "Whe.e is it likely to be established?" the general was asked. "At American Lake. There we have 70,000 acres for target practice, unlimit ed display and maneuver grounds tnat cannot be surpassed. An acre of that land could be bought at the low figure of $ 10 pr acre and tne government could make no better investment. Walla Walla has no grounds, the roads are so muddy in winter that Colonel Godfrey told me he was unaoia to exercise his troops dur ing tnree montns.- Then again in summer it is too not and altogetner the iaa is pre posterous. But it does not toiiow tnat the present post will be abandoned." General Ureely, also stopping at the Portland, t'ul.y agreed wit.i tnese views and deplored political interference in the military management of tnis country.
