Daniels was over fiom Baker City last evening. Mr. and Mrs. Thos. Galvin of Grants Pass are in the city visiting friends. The band will give an open air concert tonight at seven thirty at the Fountain. F. C. Rinehart came over from Sum mervilte yesterday to transact business in the county seat J. M. Price, the painter, is treating the Observer building to a fresh coat of paint today. " Tom Osburne. J. A. Lloyd and R. W. Kreiatof Elgin were in the city last even ing and returned this morning. The many friends of Mrs. J. W. Scriber will be pleased to learn that she is much better today but she is still dangerously ill. Mrs. Tom Osburne and family arrived last evening from Hood River and were met here by Tom Osburne of Elgin. They went to Elgin this morning where they will make their home during the summer. C. T. McDaniels. cashier of the Stock Growers bank at Wallowa, arrived in the city yesterday evening and transacted business here today. Mr. McDaniels re port Wallowa in a flurishing condition. T. E. Buehler returned this morning from the east whure h wont hrt time ago as a representative of the Brother-hood of conductors In accomp anying the body of the late A. C. Stull to Pennsylvania. Mrs. H. A. Sturdevant wife of Dr. H. A. Sturdevant will arrive next week when they will begin housekeeping, and prepare- to make La Grande their perma nent home. J. A. Keeney, clerk of La Grande camp Woodmen of the World, has received and turned over to Mrs. L. D. Reavis a draft of two thousand dollars in payment of the policy carried by the late Dr. Reavis. The W. O. W. is always first to pay its losses. Mrs. Wm. Wenham and children left this morning for their new home in Pull man Washington where her son is editor of the Pullman Tribune. The Wenhams have lived in La Grande for many years and their many friends extend them best wishes for success in their future home. R. M. Nudham District manager of the M. B. A. has returned from Ontario where he organized a good strong lodge of the M. B. A. Mr. Nudham states that the country surronding Ontario is in a flourishing c:nditio.i and everything points to make a prosperious season. The Bridge's Concert Company arrived in the city on last evening's train from Portland and were entertained while here by Mr. and Mrs. Geo. Cleaver. The mus icans left thin morning for Idaho from whence they go to Iowa where they will spend the summer vacation. Peter Bosquet and his force of car penters are making wonderful progress on the new court house having completed putting on the rustic and inside boxing Wo.'k will be begun on the vault this week. Mr. G. H. West has the contract for the stone work of the structure. Wallowa Chieftain - Water Supentendent Gillman is short a bicycle Yesterday he left his wheel in front of his office in the city building and when he returned a few minutes later he found no wheel. Up to the time of going to press the whereabouts of the wheel has not been made known to Mr. Gillman. MARRIED In Salt Lake City, Utah. June 19 Mr. Carl DeVere and Miss Ethel Steward Reid. The bride is well known in and about La Grande, having passed her childhood days in this city. Smith of Alicel was in the city this morning and found time to make a very pleasant call at the Observer office Mr. Smith is carrying on a vengiance war against the mustard plant which is invading his wheat fields much to the damage there J Mr. Smith now has a force of men in his fields with grass hooks and beet knivescutting the mustard down before it has an opportunity to ripen and reseed the ground. This is a good ex ample to other farmers and one which should be followed. California has been cursed with the mustard plant and the Grande Ronde Valley will bein a similar condition unless something is done to prevent it. DRUNKS ROUNDED UP C' ief of Police Rayburn rounded up three "Plain diunks" last night and this morning they were arraigned before Recorder Snook. Ten days on the street were the fines imposed and for the next ten days La Grande will have a crew of three removing the rough spots in the streets. That's what we have to say about loose honey.
