Rays Mm Masterly anl Patristic Screen la (entral Notwithstanding the torrents of rain which fell yes Unlay Central church was comfortably filled to attend Memorial services. . . . The G. A. R. and W. R. C attended in a body. Mrs. T. J. Scroggin sang a beautiful solo and Rev. E. B. Hays deliv ered tfie sermon. The following is a synopsis of ths Msm-' orial sermon by Rev. Hays of the Pres byterian church. Ae chose as his theme "The Times We Live in. and How tb Meet Them," and took his text from I Chron. 12-82, ' And the children of Issachar which were men that had ..understanding of the times to know what Israel ought to do." The speaker pointed out that the men of un derstanding of those times were men in touch with the Divine purpose who had a clsar comprshsnsion of ths changes and revolutions which was then In pro gress and adjusted themselves to the changed condition:. Continuing. Mr. Hays said that the men who have accomplished meet in history are those who had an understand ing of their times as did toe puritans and the men of ' 61." , The battles of today are fought for principles' and not for the supremacy of a royal family. On the field. of. Waterloo, there art 'One or ' two monuments to the memory of a reigning family. On the field of Gettysburg, their are 600 monuments erected to the mem ory of the private soldiers. Ths follow ing poem was written by his uncle. 1 To them we rear no chiseled stone, fhat like the gloomy Sphinx shall stand. With sightless eves, mute, marred and lone, Its aim and purpose quite unknown, , Eroded ae the winds havs blown The dreary, drifting, desert sand. . ii' -x ;. They sleep these green turfed mounds below; r. From love-and f.iende forever hid. Our tears today for them shall flow, And tender songs we all may know, And sweetest buds that bloom and blow, Ws rain upon their coffin lid. HI Here rests a fair-haired boy who died; No mother's form bent over him. There, those who fell in manhood's ride, And one for whom still waits a bride, Lies up the rugged mountain sids. How soon our weary eyes grow dim! IV A nation stands beside their grave: -It matters not where they may lie, Beneath the crested ocean wave, Where suns may shine, or tempests rave, Still floats the nag they died to save. And peace sweeps like a river by. , -y -':: No call at eventide they hear, . WJien lamps are lit and day is done; Bnt daises spring from year to year, -Above the one we oved so dear. And somewhere constant falls the tear, As summer dews at set of sun. VI No shriek of fife or roll of drum Shall stir the folded, pulseless hand: No more the world's uncoasing hum, , Their lips are palid, cold and dumb, . yet through all chance and change to come God bless the dead-end savs our landl It is nobler to dis for ones country. Let us on Wednesday decorate the graves of those who fought and though . dead, speak, charging ue to keep united the land, maintain the christian character of the nation and love for the flag . which makes free. "That flag of the heroes who left us their glory, Borne through their battlefield thunder and flame. Blazoned in rong and illumined in story Wave o'er us all who inherit their fame. Nor can we forget the women who as nurses, labored in the hospitals without fear of ths fever. Tr.e speaker then gave an anecdote illustrating the heroism shown by the mothers during the war, whose names will be held in memory in all the future history of our country. In order to meet the times in which we 'ive, we must be men in touch with our age and adjust ourselves to ths changed conditions. New theories are advanced, new foes are in the field and old adopt new tactics. Ths futurs will havs Its Waterloo, Gettysburgs, and Manilas but they will not be fought on field already historic. We are living in stirring times, there is a breaking with the past '-We are living, we are dwelling In a grand and awful time. In an age on ages telling To bs living is sublime. MEMORIAL ADDRESS (rclr Worlds ers changing Heaven beholding. i nou nasi out an nour ror ngnt; Now the emblazoned cross unfolding vn rigni onwara I or tne ngnt On, let all the soul within you . ror me iruin s saxe go abroad. Strike, let every nerve and sinew 1 eu on ages, tell for God." We must meet (he problems of our ags by an asgtwive citizenship. The time has corns whsn we need and should have the best mso in office. Jk time like this) demands strong men. "Godgiv men A time like M demands strong minds, grsat hearts, true faith and ready hands. Msn whom the lust of office does not kill. Msn who possess opinions and a will. ' Msn who have honor, who will not lie. Tall men, sun crowned, who live above the flag in public duty and private thinking." Again ll we wouiu iimmh, ui mmmumvu of our times, we must have a larger un derstanding of Christ's purpose. We must not mistake redemption of man's circumstances fir redemption 'of his soul Loss of faith produces spiritual paralysis and robs us of our courage. We find tie brave men in the army of the Lord. Heroes in life and saints) in death. . "The loftiest manhood and the dtvinest womanhood of the world is found in the church of God.' Let. Infidelity hide its diminishsd head the glory of man hood is the outcome.' of Christian faith and love. : Christian foith consscrates patriotism and makes soldiers for flag and country braver, manlier and nobler still In my imagination I can hsar again ths mighty, tramp, tramp, tramp, and the mighty about "we are coming Father Abraham six hundred thousand and more" and I hear once mors the battle hymn of the Republic, how it echoes down the corridors of the year and will echo until time is no more. .
