To the citizens and electors of La Grande:
We are going to have a city election.
There is nothing new , or Strang about
this, as we have one every year, but this
one is going to be different
It will not go by default nor will it be
one of those bitter and rancorous fights
that split the people into warring factions
It will bs a clean cut fair and square
deal The average citizen enjoys the
game of politics and an election without
opposing candidates is a very tame affair,
therefore we are going to show you a
good time. It is going to be a good na
tured, friendly contest but still it will be
warm enough to satisfy the most enthus
iastic partisan.
It matters not who is elected, wa ' will
pull unanimously for the up building of La
Grande.
This city is destined to become the me
tropolis of Eastern Oregon. It mostly de
pends on the people; the natural resources
were here ages before the white man's
foot trod these valleys.
"Cities are not great except as men may
make them,
Men are not great unless they do and
- dare.
Yet cities like men have destinies that
take them
That ' bear them on, none knowing
whence or where.
La Grande is a city of destiny. Its lo
cation, its surroundings, its resources, its
possibilities, Its history and the character
of its people are all prophetic of its fu
ture. .
Besides the railways we have here now.
the main line of the O. R. & N., and its
branch to Wallowa valley, we will have.
at least, one other transcontinental line,
We will have the logging road up' the
Grande Ronde river into the immense
timber belts beyond and sloping to; the
west into Grant and Umatilla counties.
and to the mines of these great basins.
We will have these valleys belted with
electric lines, and even the "Dinkey" at
Union will Anally center In La Grande.
We will have substantial machine shops
and round houses, large ware houses and
business blocks to handle and distribute,

our mills, factories, farms, forests and
orchards. Our apples will reach the
market of the world over land and across
seas. Besides the mills and factories
we now have there will be many addition
al lumber plants to cut the vast tracts of
timber on every side that Is tributary to
us, We will have packing hwses, canner
ies, older and vinegar plants, woolen mills.

social at the church to which all are in
vited. A special program has been ar
ranged, and the Adam sisters who a
short time ago gave an entertainment in
this city, will appear and assist in the

for mayor, that I am too new. It is not
so bad to be new if I am not found to be
"fresh."

for office in these United States. I would
not mention, in this connection, anvthinv
about religion, but from the fact that ob
jection has been raised that I am a Mor
mon. I will say I am not a Mormon. But
Rly parents and grand-parents were, dur
ing their lives, and my brothers and sis
ters and many of the dearest and truest
friends of my early life are loyal members
of that church. I have friends among
them who have been faithful to me
through all the up and downs of life, and
I believe that, measured by the sterling
qualities that go to make up character
and good citizenship, these people will
oompare very favorable with other Amer
icans. If my relationship to them, and friend
ship for them disqualifies rmsfrom holding
any office in the gift of the people, I am
ready and willing to step down and out
If elected, I will diligently fulfill the
duties of the office to the best of my abil
ity. I did not seek the nomination, and
if defeated. I shall not be disappointed,
but will just as readily assist in the up
building of La Grande and Union county.
