THE REVIVAL
Last evening in spite of the rain, the
audience room of Central church was
filled. The attention to the sermon was
splendid and at the close two ladies came
forward, one to unite with the congrega
tion, having recently become a Christian
in Elgin, the other to confess Christ.
Great Interest is manifest and many more
are expected to obey Christ soon. In
fact there seems nothing to hinder the
Central from enjoying one of the greatest
meetings ever held in Oregon. Mr. Hand
saker's preaching is clear and direct with
nothing of the shoddy sensational in it.
the church is united and harmonidUs, and
is standing loyally by the regular preach
er and the evangelist, and a fine corps of
personal workers are in line to win souls.
These all count and so does the respect
in which the church is held in La Grande,
Best of all the preachers and people are
trusting God for the harvest. Great
things are at hand for the cause of Christ
and for this church,

Mr. and Mrs.-S. 0. Swackhammer
came over from Union yesterday. Mrs
Swackhammer is not well.
Miss Nellie Murray left this morning to
spend Washington's birthday at home,
with Mr. and Mrs. Dune Woodell of the
Sandridge.
Mesdames Robert Eakin, William Grant,
J. K. Wright and E. B. Hays are in- Elgin
attending a missionary meeting of the
Presbyterian church. They will return
this evening. . '
Hon. E. V. Carter, of Ashland, is in the
city today. ; Mr. Carter is a candidate
for the office of Slate Treasurer, and is
leoking after his political fences in Ore
gon.
FALSE ALARM
A little excitement was-caused this
afternoon by the announcement that a fire
was raging in the Old Town. The entire
department and the rest of the town
turned out but after making a careful in
vestigation, no fire was discovered. Sev
eral of the leading citizens of the Old
Town were interviewed regarding the
presence of a great conflagration, but
they had noticed nothing of the kind, and
the populace returned to their homes and
the simple life. There was nothing doing.

CIRCUIT COURT
Yesterday afternoon all the testimony
the case of Sam Booth vs J. W. Scri-
ber was given to the jury and when court
opens tomorrow the attorneys will present
their arguments. The next case will be
the state vs Paul Rohr.

A foature in which the management of
"Hooligan in New York" . takes great

stereotyped song and dance and the
"coon" song with the chestnut, flavor
with which a long-suffering publio has
been inflicted so often are tabooed.
There is dancing, plenty of it, but it's

which they won in a contest at Tony
Pastor's theatre for novelty dancers over

his declaration to become a candidate be
fore the Democratic primaries for the
office of sheriff, and John T. Galloway of
Elgin filed his declaration for commission
er before the Republican primaries.
GRANGES TO HAVE A JOIN MEETING
Blue Mountain Grange No. 345, and
Crystal Grange No. 547,' will hold an
open, joint meeting at Imhler, Saturday,
March S, from 10 a. m. to 4 p. m.
The members of Crystal Grange will
serve dinner to the visiting Grangers and
an Interesting program will be delivered.
No effort will be spired to insure com
fort and pleasure for every visitor.

OH ELECTION NOTRE V
Notice is hereby given that the annual
city election for La city of La Grande,
Oregon, will take place in said city, on
on the 12th day of March, 1906, and that
the polls for such election will be open
from the hour of 9 o'clock a. m. until 6
p. m. said day.
That said election will be for , the pur
pose of electing the following named
officers; " ..
One mayor, one city recorder, one city
marshal, one city treasurer, one council
man from the first ward,, said city, one
councilman from the second ward, said
city, one councilman from the third ward,
said city, and two councilman from the
fourth ward, said city.
That there will be submitted to the tax
paying voters of said city, the following
propositions to be voted upon:
(a) Shall the said city of La Grande
acquire the springs situated south of said
city, known as the Falk Springs and ,the
Schilling Springs, and pipe the waters
thereof to the reservoir of said city, at a
cost not to exceed $12,000.
(b) Shall the city of La Grande retire
the present outstanding bonds of Slid
city, drawing six per cant interest, and in
lieu thereof issue bonds not drawing to
exceed five per cent.
The following polling places, judges and
clerks are hereby designated:
