it was rumored in well Informed financial
circles that a gigantic railroad merger
would soon be formed, which would Dut
all former mergers ever formed In the
shadow. Today more definite informa
tion regarding the proposed mercer was
! obtained from a well informed and thor
oughly reliable source. According to the
information thus obtained the scheme
means the consolidation of the Northern
Pacific and the Chicago, Milwaukee & St
Paul and the Great Northern and the
Burlington into two great transcontinen
tal lines. It also means an attemnt to
shut out the Harriman interests on the
Pacific Coast and a desoerate fiirht be-

greatest railroad systems in the world.

; Adams, Ore., Feb. 20 The city coun
cil has passed an ordinance raising the
license for saloons from $400 to $600.
The ordinance also provides that saloons
must be closed at 12 o'clock every night
and remain closed from 12 Saturday
night until Monday morning.

Within a year work will be begun by
the National Good Roads association on a
great highway extending clear across tl e
state of Ohio, from the Pennsylvania o

today by Col. W. H. Moore, president cf
the association. "
The road, which will be the first to be
built across a state under authority of an
organization sines the old Foderal roads,
will cost $1.600,000., Of this amount
Col. Moore says $750,000 has already
been put up by certain interests that he
will not now reveal, and the remainder
will be secured from the counties through
which it will pass.
