Indianapolis, Feb. 19. Daniel Storms,
secretary of the state of Indiana, resigned
his office this morning. This action was
brought about by the governor having de
manded his resignation. The demand
was made oh account of . the governor
having discovered alleged irregularity in
the conduct of office. -

the above men, who are charged with
complicity in the assassination of ex-Governor
Stunenburg of Idaho. Adjutant
General Wells ef Colorado,' and Deputy
Warden Mills Of Idaho, and three pinker-
ton detec.ives are guarding, the prisoners
enroute. No stops are being made be
tween Denver an d Boise. : .
The engines of the train were changed
at sidings where there are no stations
arid water taken only at out of the way
places. Fears were entertained - that
frisnds of the prisoners in Wyoming might
endeavor to interfere through a habeus
corpus. When they arrived the prisoners
wore tak-j i to the penitentiary and no
onewt allowed to communicate until

'jury will be called to return indictment
to avoid a preliminary examination,
Harry Orchard, awaiting trial for the
murder of Stunenburg, is. , reported to
have confessed, implicating the three
men arrested and three others whose
names are being withheld pending their
arrest. Haywood, Moyer and Pettibone
were arrested only when it was learned
that they were leaving. Denver. Orchard
has confessed that he attempted vto as-

of the family being in range.
Orchard told where he had hidden his
gun and cartridges. They afterward
found them as directed. ' He is said to
have attempted the assassination of the
supreme judge of the Colorado court, but

Denver Feb. 19. Without going into
the merit of the charges of the com
plicity of the assassination of ex-Governor
Steunenberg, of Idaho, public eenti
ment fcer is in favor of Moyer and Kay-
Wood because their arrest gives no oppor
tunity to combat the allegations. Legal
authorities declare that Idaho and Colo
rado authorities acted illegally and can
be prosecuted for kidnapping for , thoir
action in forcing them to leave trie state.

Patterson of Colorado announced in ' the
senate today that they would be governed
by the unconstitutional right to retain
his teat .

A Joint resolution directing the inter
state commerce commissisn to investigate
and determine the relation if any between
the oil trust and the railroad and de
termine to what degree it controlled the
road, also to what degree of control the
oil trust had in making freight rates, was
Introduced in the House by Campbell, Re
publican from Kansas. The commission
was ordered to investigate the rates and
practices of the railroads in the transport'
ation oil frsm Kansas and Indian Terri
tory to interstate designations. The
hearing will be held in Kansas, Maroh 12.
PANAMA CANAL
In referring to the canal question today
the President stated that it would be
noticed that th American engineer on
the consulting boards and -the board of
commissioners by more than two to one
were in favor of th lock type of canal,
and that th foreign engineers were unit
ed against the lock system. Th Presi
dent is of th opinion that th lock type of
canal could b built in half th time and
at much less risk and it wqyld be much
easier to enlarge t urn if th tea level plan
should be accet ted.

morning of an attempt to assassinate
President Reyw, of Columbia, on the tenth
of thi month. Eght shots were fired
at him while in his carnage. Th Presi
dent escaped uninjuied. Th assassins
escaped capture.
