parents and patrons of the city school
to four matter which are vitally con
nected with the matter of securing th
best results in th public school work.
1. It 1 alarming to note the number
of (mail children who are addicted, will
fully; to the tobbaco habit and profanity.
Parent and others will greatly assist us

bear upon these matters. ' Do not be de
ceived. Perhaps your jiwn phild is on
of them. Investigate and see.
2. The deportment of school children
of all ages, while on the street is in sad
need of correction. About 75 per cent of
the children who throng the postofhc
and public streets, engaging in profanity,
fighting, loud talk and rudeness, have no
business on the public streets and at ' the
post office at all,.... Why . not make,, an ef
fort to decrease this offensive conduct?

nights. This is ruinous to good work in
school. I am sorry indeed that some
parents art interested so .little in the
school that they will thus hinder and in
jure the school. Of course some will say
it is no business of mine what the child
does. Perhaps not ; Perhaps It is. But
at any rate, the standard of schoul work
in La Grande will always be low so long
as parents encourage children thus to cul
tivate an indifference for school. ' Please

cur on Friday or Saturday nights.
