Phillips, president of ! the defunct Vancouver, Wash., ! bank who was indicted by the grand jury of Clarke County, Wn- on a charge of accepting deposits in the bank after it was insolvent, is on trial at Kalama this week. A change of venue from Clarke County to Cowlitz County was granted the defendant because it was alleged the people of Clarke County were so aroused oveY the affair that a fair trial could not be had there. Fred W. Tempes, Prosecuting attorney and Judge M. L. Pipes of Port land are prosecuting the case while ex-Judge W. W. McCredie of Vancouver and ex-Judge A. Bennet of The Dalles are defending. made a vicious aitack uoon Mc. Robert, who, in order to defend himself and his sister, fired a shot at Iiadclitr hitting him in in the head. He died a few hours later. McUobert gave him self up to the officers of Cowlitz County and is now in jail at Kalama, Later A coroner's jury of Cowlitz County has completely exonerated McUobert and no ar rest will be made. Tarred A School Ma'am Three men at Lincoln Center Kansas are on trial for having tarred a school teacher. On Oct ober 7, 1911 Miss Mary Cham berlain, a school teacher of that place, accompanied one Edward Ricord to a dance in the neigh borhood. On their way home they were held up and while Misa Chamberlin was having tar poured over her body and limbs, her escort was hiding in the brush. Three men have been arrested for the assault and several more arrests will probab ly follow. MURDER AT STELLA Road District and Valuations City Henry Radcliff of Stella, Wash., was shot and killed last Tuesday at his home by his brother-in-law, W. McRoberts. It appears that Radcliff was on a spree, came home drunk and commenced to beat his wife. She stood it as long as she could and then ran for tha home of her brother, McRobort, who went to the Radcliff home and undertook to pacify the crazed man. Rad cliff rf used to be pacified and The County Clerk has compiled the valuations of all Road Dis tricts and incorjwrated Cities of Columbia County, which sire given as follows. These amounts do not Include the value of any property that is assessed by the State Hoard of Tax Commission ers, as the Clerk will not be no tified of the amount of said assesments until January.
