FINANCIAL "The financial aide of farming, the world'a greateat industry, ia almoat entirely neglected by both the farmer and the arhoola, aaya Iean J. A. liexell, of the Oregon Agricultural college, author of a volume on "Farm Accounting and Kuaineita Method, now in it aixth thousand. "I'rofeiwor Ilailey, of New York, aaid, in dicuning the matter of hi own atate: 'In visiting practically every farm In one of the counties of the atate, we did not find one man who knew how much it cost him to produce milk or to raise any of his crops. "The aecretary of agriculture, in recent year books, points out the re. markable prosperity of the farmer; that the export of farm products is vastly in .. cess of all other ex nrta combined; that a million agricultural dt-htora have been transformed during the last ten years into the same num ber of surplus di'saitora; that 'con- trary to iiia reputation, the farmer is a great organizer, and has achieved remarkable ami enormous auccessea in many lines of economic co-operation in which the (Hiiple of other occupa tions have either made no beginning or have nearly, oi not completely. failed.' He points out that most fartnen live better than the average merchant or mechanic. 'It ia doubtless true that the farmer la becoming a factor to be reckoned with in the business world; that the average farmer anowa vasuy more a!xut scientific farming than hi father (lid. He understand more thorougly the value of proper cultiva tion, of fertilization, of rotation of crops, ami of diversified farming. Iiut it cannot be said that he owes his success to Improved business method. He ha been successful rather in spite of hi ignorance in this respect, and because of tiie lavish generosity of mother nature." WHAT FRUIT FOR EASTERN OREGON? "Care should be exercised in the se lection of varieties of fruit for planting In F.aatern Oregon," says Prof. C. I Lewis, of the Oregon Agri cultural college horticultural depart ment, "since the higher elevation of that part of the state suffer more or tes from the severity of the winter and the drouth in summer. "Aa to apples, the Russian varieties will be the hardiest. These in low al titude are summer and fall varieties, but often in high altitude they are long keeper. The Red Astrachlln, Oravenstein, Duchess, Wolf River, Wagoner and Macintosh Red are the best and most satisfactory to plant. Haw II t It. Wllklna That chap live on tha fat f tha land. I'eache aa a rule ahould not be grown in the higher elevationa of F.aatern Oregon, but occasionally auch varieltiea a Alexander and Amsden do very well. The Gobb'a apricot ia often auccesHful. The four kind of cherries suggested by I'rof, Iwia are the Lambert and King aweet cherries, and Early Rich mond and Olivette for. sour one. Two varietie of raspberries CJuth. bert Bnd Turner'a Red are named as goon, ami any or the standard vari eties of blackberries, such aa Kitta tinny, Lawton, and Eldorado, may be grown. Red Jacket and Champion gooseberries, and Isedcrwood, War field, and Clark 'a Seedling strawber rie are also mentioned. COMMERCIAL VALUE OF DWARF FRUITS. "The dwarf fruit a a commercial pniKHition ia still in an experimental condition in this state say Prof. C I. Lewi, horticulturist of the Oregon Agricultural college, in a recent dis cussion of the fruits of the state. "The dwarf pear," he continued, "looks quite promising to be used in planting by itself or as a tiller. "There I one dwarf pear orchard in Idaho, and a number in this state, but few are in bearing as yet. The trees can be planted close together. They come into early bearing, and generally produce a fine crop, j hey are gener ally worked on Anger Uuince or Port uguese stock, and then worked over to Duchess and Koonce, and finally work ed over to whatever variety ia desired. "The dwurf pear ia obtained by us ing a root that is slow growing and then pruning. The pruning should be done in auch a way as to throw out the laterals and spoura. Summer pruning ia practiced much more with the dwarf stock than with the standard. "Dwarf peachea are also being grown; these come into bearing quite heavily the first year. There are aev eral plantings in thia state, and it will only bo a short time before we will know more of these. "The dwarf apple has been tried very sparingly. When it is put on Paradise stock it is more of a curi osity, but when planted on the Doucin stock it may make a saunfactory tree for Western Oregon. "The dwarf fruit offers a splendid opportunity for a home garden, and a good conservative field for trial in the commercial orchard." TO PREVENT FOREST FIRES. Corvallis, Or. E. O. Siecke. of the O.
