Legal notice 25 cen'a per line County Official Paper And Mayor Rushlight, is the way they will say it in Portland now. The election interested a number of people here, and near ly all wished to see Simon re elected, as they thought that he would run a cleaner and more moral town than Rushlight The government of a large city ma terially affects the small towns that are its neighbors. Pull all together for the high school. A new school building is a necessity and why not make it a good one and a credit to the best town on the river? Talk it up. Tell your neighbor and thus do something for the rising gen eration, and at the same time for the property values of St Helens. A first class school structure be tween here and Houlton would do as much to increase property values as would an industry em ploying a number of men. September 16th. There will be the usual high class speed pro gram, and the best harness races on the coast are seen at Salem. Two of the purses are for $5,000, and there are a number of other large ones. Professor C. E, Lake has charge of the exhibit from this county to the State Fair and also to the Astoria Centennial Exposition, aud everyone who has anything worthy of exhibit ion should place it in his hands. "Reduced Rates on all Roads" is the way that the advertise ments of the Rose Festival read, but there has been a decided ab sence of anything like a reduction from here this week, and it does not seem fair to this section if they are getting lower rates else where. During the past week it ha3 been the same old eighty five cents from Houlton to Portland as formerly, and when we went up the other day and did not get there in time to get a ticket, the conductor soaked us a ten cent rebate jusf to show that the road needed the money. The premium list of the fifth annual Oregon State Fair has reached the Mist office and it is bigger and more generous than ever. There are prizes for every thing either raised or manufact ured on the farm. In all, the pre miums on livestock, agricultural and manufactured products am ount to $16,000. The fair will be held at the same old place, the State Fair Grounds at Salem, and during the week commencini September 11th, and ending on Don't forget that big celebra tion at St. Helens on the Fourth of July, and it seems that Mayor White ha3 decided that it shall be a sane Fourth. Who can crit icise his action? Of course near ly everyone has enough of the kid in them to want to have a little fireworks, but when the terrible number of deaths that result from explosives on the Fourth is considered it seems as though Congress should take a hand and make the celebration of the great national holiday the same all over the United States. Fireworks under proper super vision in the evening is far bet ter than the promiscuous use of them in the crowds all day long, Th Council Meeting. The City fathera got together Isst Monday night and went after thing in way that ahowt that they mean busi ness. Tbt principal Job ol the evening sras attending to the matter of the city's claim to the property in (ront of the city ami particularly that at the foot of Cvwliu Street The following order was made try tfcs cosncll la regard to I thia matter: "The new building being constructed at the foot of Cowl its Street was con sidered. After discussion it was moved that the Recorder be instructed to noti fy Mr. V. A- Ilnrri', also P.lew anil Mace, to remove the Raid building with in five days from date of mid notice. "The marshal i instructed to for thwith arrest auy and all person who begin to construct any buildings on the Strand." The petition of Mr. Dillard for permis sion to baild dock at the foot of Wil lamette Street was again taken up and laid on the table. A coiTimunic.-itton from Orrin Backux, of Rainier, in regard losewars Was read and discussed, and Mr. Keltey, of Port land, was present to try to get the job of engineer on a sewer system here, but no action was taken. The council also n.et in special session on Tuesday afternoon and papers made out by the City Attorney to be served on the property owners on the Strand , were considered and ordered served as I jtnade out. The proclamation of the .tmyor in regard 10 a sane rounu 01 July was considered and approved by the members of the council. The matter of the property on the Strand and at the foot of the street, has been nnder consideration for some time snd it is time that it was settled in one way or another. If it rightly belongs to the city, than the city should get a good title and if not then doubtless the people who have used it for some time and improved will be glad to get a clear title to it and know that they are the ondisputed owners. YANKTON SCHOOL The Yankton school closed Wednesday, May Slut. On Sunday, May 24th. the das sermon was delivered by Itev. De Bord, of Houlton, to s large and appre ciative andience. It wa an educational sermon and full of excellent advice to the pupils. On Friday and Saturday nights, prog ramme were rendered at the Grange Hall. The Hall was beautifully decor sted with the class colors, Bine and Gold. The programme commenced at eight o'clock each evening, and every pupil in the school took part, and each and everyone of them done their part in way that was a credit to themselves and their teachers. The teachers of the Yankton school during the psst term were Miss Myra Bowman, primary, and C. E. Lake, principal. Mr. Lake ha been at this school for the past three years, and with Miss Bowmrn gave the people of Yank ton service that was more than satisfac tory.
