The followirg is not taken from a Socialist paper, but from the news columns of last Mon day's Oregonian. The dispatch states that Wall Street realizes that almost the absolute control of the country's financial affairs is now centralized in the hands of a few men and that J. P. Morgan heads the most gigantic combination of capital in the world. Here are a few things, according to the statement, that this combination of capitalists could do: It could call $200,000,000 of loans over night and ruin any adversary. It could reduce credits to such a degree as to cause extreme money stringency and great com mercial distress. It could tie up the cash hold ings of New York banks by de manding certification of checks for enormous amounts. It could deplete bank reserves in New York by causing ship ments of cash to any part of the country. It vuiM mnkp mnnpv rat of interest almost as it chose, from j z per cent to iw per cent on cau j loans. i It could cripple the financial operations of the government by ; refusing to purchase any bond issue. j It could dictate the financial i operations cf the great railway i systems and expanding indus-l trial concerns. ! It could, and docs dictate terms I and actions of every company: promotion that is important' enough to be financed in Wall ; street. i It probably did dictate to Pres-; the purchase by the btreet trust j of its Tennessee properties. The j money power is a real thing and not a populistic figment. Why; 3T'n:s'! o? ret cf men s.: u?d I ' desire sach great power for good or evil is hard for the plain peo-, pie to understand. Morgan and ' his associates may feel secure, and believe the edifice they have erected is founded upon a rock and indestructible, yet their wealth may vanish almost in a night It is based, to a great ex tent, upon public confidence, and when the people are convinced that it will be used for any of the purposes enumerated above it will be curbed, or, if that is found impossible, it will be taken from them.
