Petitions are in circulation, and no doubt a sutlkieut number of signers will be secured, calling for a special election to be held in this county on Tuesday, , November 2J, I9W, to determine wheth er the sale of intoxicating liquors shall be permitted in the county. Now get your thiuking cap oa and de cide how you intend to vote. There are two arguments iu favor of the saloon : 1st. The license money in the incor porated cities saves the taxpayers several thousaud dollars annually. 2nd. It is hard to enforce probition and doubtless there will Le some illegal (telling of liquor. These are Uie only arguments in favor Of the traffic and they are fallacious. For every dollar paid in to tbe treas ury by saloons the taxpayers have to put up five Units the amount for maintenance of pauperis, and criminals created by tbe use of alcoholic stimu lants. The saloon iss tax on every other in dustry. Men cheat the merchant and starve Uteir families in order to satisfy the ap petite for liquor. It is the frequent cause of murder, and indirectly the cause of a great per ' ceuuge of all crimes committed. It is said that "moderate drinking" barms no one; but without " moderate drinking" there could be no "immod erate drinking," nor could saloons thrive. If the tatrons of cal'ions aver aged hut four gUsies of beer or whisky per day the saloon keepers would soon go out of business. Knowing this, they use every means to promo: e intem perance, and wtiere there is occasionally a saloon keeper who attempts to keep within the law, the greater number of tlumseek every opportunity to evade it, ; and there aie ten times more violations j of the liquor laws in wet states than of ! the prohibition laws in dry states. This is inevitable from the character of the business. Men do not engage in it from j the live stock show at the Alaska-Yu-Choice, but because they conceive it to ! kon-i'acific-Expositiou, which will be be an easy way to make money. The booth attracted fully as much attention as any other featuie in the building, and the inquiries made were numeious and were indicative of a desire to in vestigate our resources with the inten tion of locating here. Several thousand copies of the Mist, big ediiiuu were dis tributed, and nono were given away carelessly. No copies were nattered about the grounds, as is geuemliy the cai with adverting matter, and this indicates that they were considered of autllcleiit value to be taken home auj carefully tvad. Many who resided In other Stales asked tor and were given several eopir to send to friend and relatives at their old lioUlW. We believe good work was done and that the result ill demonstrate that advertising pay a county at well as It due individuals. THE eiTTOS CASK. The verdict ol the military board In the Sutton ease w ill not be accepted as final or Just by Mrs. Sutton or by the general public. The tendency of mem bers o( the military profession to stand in (or the purpose of covering any scamUl that may affect their fellow is to notorious that notlilug but acongros sionsl investigation willeversatisfy dis interested persons thst Suttou took bis own life, and. even if that fact were fully established it would not prove that he was not done to death by his as sailant. Their belief is senerally shared by the public, and the mother proposes to push the investigation by every means wealth and leal can procure, until the responsi bilitv for her son's death is definitely ; fixed and proper punishment meted out. The hoodlums who disgraced the train ing given them by the Government will receive little ivuipathy. and it is to be hotted the full truth will ultimately be knuwn. LIST OK 41K0RS. OUR COUNTY FAIR Are You Going to Aid Id Making It a Great Success? The llrst annual fair for Cduinbia County opens its doors to-day, and it la hoped the attendance will be such as to stimulate the management and the pub lic to greater efforts for the year 1010, in oider that the fair may come to be recognised a a potent factor in building up the industry of agriculture with all its kindred branches fn this county. There is no better advertisement pos sible for a county than a f ucvessful fair, whe.e the products of the soil are dis played in competition and where all may realise the possibilities of the county in which they live and become enthusiastic in the advocacy of its merits. Tbe Sta'e Fair serve Ita purpose, and much good has been accomplished by exhibiting our product there, and men have been thereby indued to Nine here anil pun liASC land and engage In pro fitable indumiv. But all our people can not attend the State Fair, and for this reason the county fair should and doubtless will receive their pntronage.ea' pecially as a considerable poition of the exhibit at Salem has-been reehipped and willbtSshown at the county fair Several amusement features have been contracted for, but whether they materialize or not there wilt be abun diince to engage your attention and to repay your visit. It is expected the at tendance will be greater than at any previous public event in the hiflorv the county. Bring your family and your di incr with yon ; and have a good time.
