Quick, on going to his barn Tuesday morning found one of the stalls occupied by a man who had evi dently been having a "good time" the previous night. He was probably an honest workingman, but that does not lessen the fact that such men are a menace to the safety of the town. They generally carry matches about their clothes and there is considerable danger that they will use them carelessly or leave them where they' slept. Mr. White, of White & Anderson, the rustling Houlton merchants, ha been quite sick during the past week. There will be sarvice in the Episcopal church next Sunday evening, Sept. 20th, at 1M. WOMEN ARE WOMEN. A Rather Roundabout Way to Prove th. Proposition. Men naj women are angels; women lay women are cnta. Let on pause moment and reason upon this thing. It women are angels however, .tlutt does not seem to be tbe proper start ing point. Let as try again. If angels are cats but, no; that la hardly reasonable, for angels have wings, and cats do not fly. We must begin again. If women are cats but that Isn't possible, for cats do not talk, and bow could a dumb animal express an opin ion In words of a woman? Whatever cats may think, tbey never say a word about n woman, while women well, women are not cats. Now let as retnrn to tbe first propo sition. If women are angels, they wouldn't say women are cats. Angels don't talk that way. Once upon a time a man married woman. He said she was an angel; tbe women said she was a cat nappy mau, not to know tbe difference be tween an angel and' eat! lien say women are angels, and by this token women say angels are eats, Therefore, angels being eats, eats most be angels, and, both being tbe same, women are women. Which Is precisely what tbey are. W. 3. Lampton In Llpplncotf s. NEW MEXICO. How That Portion of Northern Now Spain Got Its Nam. The country now called Mexico waa not so called till 1810, when tbe revolt against Spain began. .TJp to Independ ence the country was called New Spain and was divided Into tbe same number of provinces as Spain, each with name of a province In Spain, with the prefix of "new." bnt New Mexico was not Included tn this division. It got Its name In this way: In 1501 Prnnc-lsco Ibarra was In charge of an expedition of exploration Into wbnt Is now northern Dnrango and southern Cblhuabna and discov ered an Indian village near where San ta Barbara now stands In which the houses wre whitewashed and the peo ple made and wore cotton cloth, rais ing the cotton In tbe neighborhood. He wrote on account of his discovery to his brother frj the City of Mexico, telling htm be bad discovered "una nueva Mexico," a new Mexico, anotber Mexico, meaning that be hiM found another town Ukv the City of Mexico, and thereafter all this portion of north ern New Spain was known as "Xuera Mexico" tbnt Is, New Mexico which name It has retained, though now much reduced In extent. Las Yegas Optic. Muskrats For Moat. Of all animals that supply meat to man th niuskrnt has been tbe most abused and tbe least understood, says tbe Baltimore Star. Its name bad bred In the public mind a prejudice that baa been almost unconquerable, bat truth will prevail In spite of fate. As a fact tbe muskrat is one of tbe neat est and most delightful of animals. It Is a crank in cleanliness. It dines with the core of an epicure. It eats only tbe whitest aud tendcrcst morsels. And Its flesh has qualities that can be compared ouly to terra plo. Indeed, there are good people along the Chesa peake, where all the best things lire and grow, who And In tbe well served muskrat satisfaction that Is equal to tbe dlamondbaek. Only tbe Ignorant and tbe prejudiced think differently, and they may be educated. BEIGGrS YANKTON, ORE. Ripening Bananas. It is a familiar fact that bananas are Imported green, but It came as a new tblug to a visitor to tbe banana district in Colombia to find that ba nanas are not permitted to ripen on the plant even down there. Tbey are cut and set tv haug somewhere until they wither ripe, us tbe phrase Is. Bananas do not bare to be yellow to be ripe. Tbnt is ouly tbe color of tbe skin when it has dried up. To the person who is accustomed to eating bananas ouly when they are yellow It scorns odd to peel tbem when they are green and Oud that they are perfectly ripe within and fit to eat New York-Sun. Th. Prisoner's Rstort. It is a pvisou cbnplalu's duty to give a depnrtliig prisouer good ndrlce and to exhort him to be a decent and hon orable man lu the future, in tbe course of one of these Interviews a chaplain said. "Now, my friend, I hope you'll never hare to come back to a place like l his." The prisouer looked at blui thought fully and ihen asked, "1 say, chaplain, you draw a salary here, don't yon?" Wiicu tbe chaplain replied in the af-fli-uintlvo the prisoner remarked, "Well, say. If me and the other fellows didn't keep coming back you'd be out of a Job." Didn't Nood a Ooetor. "Let me kiss those tears away!" ha begged tenderly. She fell In his arms, and be was busy for tbe next few min utes. Aud yet the tears flowed on. Are you suffering?
