Portland between i, Messrs Devliu and lane, Lr the mayor alty, brings forward all' tho old stork arguments in favor of uom-parlisati:hip in county and municipal contests. ' We are told that the voter should not eon aider the political affiliation of Uie can didates, but should select the one that , will make the lest public officer. The . argument is always used by the minority party and ia intended to influence those who imagine they are independent voters. It has defeated many a good man as it defeated Withycombe and has put many an incompetent Into office. It is ouly a half truth. Neither party nor personal fitness should be lost sight of in a contest for tiovernor of Or , egoo or Mayor of ronland- Both should have their .weight. Tho republican voter owea his support to Devlin pro vided Devlin is a fit man for the office to which be aspires. Tli.it should be . tho only question. The assumption that he will favor corporate interest at the - expense of the public goad appears -to bare no foundation in ins previous record. He is not an unknown man. At present lie holds the very important position of Auditor of the City of Port land, and lie appears to have made a good public servant, and to be a good citizen, thoroughly interested in the wellfare and progress of the community that has honored him With it confidence and with a spinal column of sufficient rieidity to withstand any amount of pressure that may be brought upon him to force incompetent men upon the pub lic service merely because they bear the Repnblican label. We do not believe the "undesirable" element can expect any favors from Mr. Delvin, should he be elected Mayer. About the same thing can be said in favor of Mayor Lane, though it is tot to his credit that ha permits a dirty personal attack upon - his opponent. Lane has accomplished considerable in the-cause of better municipal govern ment. In fact he h,;s done so well that "' he has estranged an element in his own party that has heretofore given . him its hearty support, and they are opposing him today, though not openly. If a man of wavering character, whose honesty was doubted, or who was afraid to express himself upon questioi-s of vital interest to the city of Portland had , been nominated the. Republican voters would have had just cause to desert him and flock to the standard of Harry Lane; - but, a we view it, there h? nettling good " that can be said of Mr. Lane that dots not apply with equal force to his opnon ent. This being true, party organiz ation is entitled to tome recognition. Mr. Devlin won his nomination honestly, and . his Republican opponent, in ti.e primaries are supporting him loyally, and all other Republicans should follow their examole. The greatest and b?ct ' men the party ever had, from Lincoln to Roosevelt, were warm blooded partisans, who believed in supporting Republican nominees lor all important ollices, pro viding, always, that they were honest and capable meri. As we uad-r.-tarid it. !Mr. Devlin asks fur nothing b'lta &jua:e deal, and is running on his merits a a man and public officer, as well i:i upon the principles and platform of the Re publican pa-ty. ,, PIONEER REUNION. THE COMMERCIAL ILIB. Ail liilcreKlius; Messlou at the t'ounlj Court Kooin. The Houlton-St. Helens Board of Trade met at the County Court room In St, Helena last Monday evening, and had a very interesting feision, the chief top'n-s hcu-sed Uing sand-lime brick, the road between the two com in it i,i ties and the njatu-r of advertising our te- source, in order that people liny be attracted to Columbia County. Mr. M. C. Tho matter of the county roid between the twocitii'S was discussed quite freely un I it developed there is quite a diver gence of opinions as to the prop.-r line of said highway, which will be inv.sti gatt'il more tlmroiiglily before nctiv work ia beitun. A. M.
