The work of the geological survey in carrying out the provisions of the na tional irrigation act has brought it to the fore as one of the great executive departments of the government. With a government irrigation fund which will be by the end of the present fiscal year in the neighborhood of $25,000,000, this work must be recognized as one of the very large internal improvements of the country. Although irrigation opera tions are confined largely to tbe sixteen arid and semi-arid Western stales, the eastern part of the country ' must be more or leu interested lor several rea sons. Men are constantly moving west ward looking for new homes where they can earn a livelihood or become land owners, while business men are inter ested in seeing a development of the West which will afford them wider home markets for their manufactured pro ducts. The changing of the Western deserts into tens of thousand of new end productive small farms vill not nnlv relieve some of the overcrowded sections of the East, but will stimulate business of all descriptions, just ss the opening of the great Mississippi valley provided a market for tho Araericau manufacturers such as Secretary W ilson says, as can be found in no oOur part of tha world. ' Alreadv the geological survey has designated tome fifteen large irrigation projects throughout the West, where huire impounding dams snd ditches which will be as large as rivers are to bo ructed. Work is already com menced on some of these, aud the next two or three years will eo tho national irrigation policy in full operation. Tbe t2j.000.000 now practically avlail- ahla for irrieation construction is by no means the limit of this work, ei nee the fund is constantly growing, through the sales of first irrigation work is comple ted, the coat of its construction will be gin to coins back into the fund for use on some other project. Prosperity I What a hearty, happy ring the magic word has I What a picture it presents of teeming fields, and granaries tilled to tbe bursting; of deep mines, where every blow of tbe pick brings forth cop per or iron or silver; oi uie lumuvr wood, and the stately monarch of tba forest crashing to earth under tbe blows tf the woodman's axe; of laboring loco motives, and white winged snip, bear ing to tbe marts ol commerce the pro ducts of field and forest and mine; of expanding towns and cities, alivs with human activity in snops ana lactory office and counting house 1 Work for everyone ana tne maximum return lor toil, that is what brings pros perity. Peace, contentment, thejoy.of liviug ; these are a few of its results. The Pacific Coast is enjoying such pros perity as can be found in no other lo cality in the United States, fior is it the result of any abnormal circumstan ces, but the rational outgrowth of natu ral conditions. Nowhere can be found such natural resources toch fertile soil, such mineral deposits, such gigantic forests, inch fisheries, such waterway, such a climate. These things are the materials of prosperity. All that is needed is men and women to avail themselves of these unapproachable advantages. And they are coming. In tens and hundreds and thousands they are following tbe course of the empire to dwell in this land oi plenty, 't here is room for all, and for millions more, for the productivity of this marvelous land has been hardly guested. Here is the promised land prosperi ty's headquarters. Gird yourself, ri and come to enjoy its blessings. Bargsias oa Cl.tklnc: and Shoes. Men's suits at $4.75, f6. 7.50 and 1 10; worth dauble.
