The fool hunter or fisherman wh BREAKS CAMP and LEAVES A FIRE BURNING should be put tchtre kt tan do no more harm. OCR LOCAL TRAGEDY, Io etnall community like St. Helens it ia difficult to write the tnuli regard ing local scandal without exciting the animosity of tome, ret that is exactly JJjajt newspaper mijst do if it is to be a iaotor for good in the coniuutnity and worthy of the respect of the people of the eonnty in which it is published. Those who criticiso superficially the actions of the child who haa come into auch disgraceful prominence should think a little deeper and their blame ruay be mingled with pity. Kncom rrnssed by good influences, surrounded by everything tlist tends to the tip boildiug of their moral nature, with all the advantages that wealth and Lreed jng can give, children have grown op into perverts, disgraced their parents, and become members of the irreclaima ble criminal class, Ts there not, then xonie pity for the young girl who, with out any of these advantages, has thrown her life away aad put herself at the merry of the male brutes who have played the part cf seducer, and pander, pf bright intellect and a romantic .disposition, with a negligent father who spends his tjine and money in the sal oons, and home surroundings that no one bat a wife is ever ever expevted to submit to, this young gttl turned fio n )ier drudgery to the only recreation she conld bave the read n; of highly epictd and corrupting novels, w hich have so wrought upon her moral nature that she aectns absolutely enable pi distinguish troth from i:UHbxxJ, and h$s toli a mass of stories that are conflicting and .totally nnwortliy of belief. Yet it must be remembered that in all this she is the main sufferer. The man who ruined her will probably .escape any punish ment by the low, and it js .doubtful whether there will be any conviction as a result of the eerie of crimes that have been committed ; hut the girl's punish ment will be sure and terrible, in all jiuinan probability. Those who enter upon the flower-strewn path of rice very seldom are diverted therefrom. They generally pursue it to the bitter end; jind. what ths.t means very few know. If it conld be known before the first false step is taken the ranks of the ! demi-monde would be lacking in re cruits. If all the horrors and nameless jnfamics that men and women descend po could be shown to a young girl w hose pchnaUona are wayward, and she could be impressed with the idea that she is entering upon a course to which there is no other termination, it might be f hat even a life of toil, amid uncongeni al surroundings, would seem bearable pntil the time came for a legitimate release. There are other girls and boys in tbia community and in all other com fntjnjtiee, who are in danger, and it is Jot them we write. They are liable to think their lot it bard when it is not really so, but even if it is, it is generally better to endure existing evils than to fly to others that yoa know not of. It it to be hoped that the lesson taught will be of some benefit to others, that mothers and fathers will take better care of their children and more lntere.it la their homes. If parents prefer "pleasure" to doty they may ba sure heir children will do the same. It is idle for an immoral man to prate about morality or to profess defperan sorrow when his children go astray. iaV -rmm w w w ww "' M the rmLirrm isxrosmox.
