On the ball ground at times disputes arise which are Indulged in very earnestly by tne contending aides but as soon as these are disposed of tbe players are Mends and tha game proceeds. This was tha oaae at Scappoose. Of course much chaffing took placo which waa reoeived in good part by eilheJ side and when the contest waa over it was discovered that the friendly relations between the players had not been disturbed. Two umpires were chosen. St. Helens ohoeing David Davis and Scappoose selected Mr. Vollans, whose decisions were marked with fairness and readily accepted by the playera. Fined Twenty-Fivb Dollars. A son of Dr. Bailey of Hllltboro Is one of the it any who are tiahlng in the Nsbalem head waters for health sad pleasure. Before these lines are printed tha wedding bells will have told of the uniting in mar riage of Miss Bophronla Wilkinson, one of our best knowa and moat respected young ladles, to Edward Joseph of St. Helens. I am sorry to have to chronicle the death T. H. Lavender, a bard working pioneer, known among his neighbors ss an honest, conscientious eitisen. He carried on a blacksmith shop at Vernonla for several years snd was prominently Identified with tbe upbuilding or tue town ana surrounaina country. He leaves a wire aad lourcnuoren to mourn bis loss. Laat Saturday Jos. Coulter discovered a Bra in the brush dangerously near bis barn. On investigation it was found to have been set out either carelessly or maliciously by some scalawag or dastardly scoundrel. The law cannot bs to severe on tbe crime of setting out timber fires In a new country. Necessity compels tha settlers to build houses and barns In clearings, altogether too small clearings for safety from forest fires, and no man with a spark ofhumanity will endanger a nelghbor'a barn and house, the results ot perhaps a lifetime of bard hip, by caieleatly setting out Hresattbis time ot the year. Tlita summer is un usualy dry, and consequently fires are more than usually dangerous, snd I would suggest that a synopsis of the law relating to setting out fires In Oregon would make Interesting reading for Tiia Mist's sub scribers. - v Bucklen's Arulc Salve.
