Tbe grand ball given by tha Knights of Pythias at Rainier last niiiht was s grand aucseee in every particular. An enjoyable time was had by all who at tended ' and the occasion was voted the social event of the seseon. When you are looking for a piece of land for farming pur (wees, or a piece of retideuce prO)erty, consult D. J. BwiUer, at tuts place, nr. switier has some very valuable and nicely sit uated property listed which he is offer ing at exceedingly low prices. Tbe Columbia at thia.point is steadily rising, and is now 10-4 above esitrnated low water mark. Ou May 21 the wa ter eas 13-0 feet above, aud slowly receded until June 1 when the fall was' checked by warm weather. The water is coming from Snake river, snd indications are that a still higher fioirttwill be reached before the Hood recedes. ' Tbe Columbia, Snaks snd tributary rivers' are gialually riaiug and the lroepetHa fur a continue rise. Con siderable danger yet exists and while Ligli water ia yet to be expected, yet it l not probable that they will attain a higher point than they have iu HJbQ, 1882. or 1887, when in each of thete yeaj-s the river was from 24 to 28 feet el Portland. Weather Bulletin No. 12. Realising the demand for refresh luentain our city, John Swager bat tbis week placed in his popular retort one of the latest improved soda foun tains. Mr. Swager it constantly mak ing improvements and adding to bit stock many uew and novel features which the public demande. Helsns, is rapidly beeomiog one of the best patronised! business houses in this county. Time deposits are being re ceived st a satisfactory rate, and call deposits bave been urge since the house first opened its doors. Tha house is deserving of much credit and a liberal support at tbe hande of our citisens, for the energy displayed by IU projectors in embarking in the en terprise under very unfavorable cir eumstancaa. Cart accidents seem to have been quite in vogueduring the past week. Mr. Jff. Pinckney succeeded in damag ing his cart, while Mr. C. Spencer met with an accident which made a com plete wrook of bis cart. Whatever may have been the cause of such mis haps, we would like to suggest to road supervisors thst perhaps it would not be a bad idea for tbam to postpone their day-dreams for tha season, snd perform their duties at a more lively rate. . . Tbe Big Bonanta company filled its engagement to play here Wednesday evening, and attempted to entertain a inu :h bettor audience than they des erved. Minnie Marden, "The Georgia Wonder," bas soms sort of a phenome nal power which shs did not exhibit to very good advantage, ller alleged mind-reading was a good exhibition of hypnotism. In tha absence of a bet ter place tbe company was forced to show in the court house where there were no accomodations whatever, and which fact had much to do with tbe quality of the performance Tha carriage and four hundred feet of boss for ths Hose oompany arrived Tuesday morning, and the lifting capacity of the new reservoir was tes ted at noon.. The entire four hundred feet of - hose was laid and a stream was throH from the street to the top of the Oriental hotel through a 9 inch gervrac pipe, with tbe water tank only half tftHl. whloh would give a pressure of 4 pounds. A further tost wssmade in the evening with the pumps work ing, and highly satisfactory rssults Were obtained. There can be no room to doubt that with a reservoir on the Muff In the neighborhood of the churchthe. department would have sufficient head to throw water any where it will ever be needed, and could always be prepared to meet any emer gency. -Jt can only be a question of time when tbe emergancy will arise, end then the city will want water and wHt t bad, OLATSKANIB. Mr. Sliffler, of Cherrytree, Pa., has been making the city a visit during the past week, extending bit trip from Chicago to the coast. That he seems to bavs a special interest iu one of our ladies is nothing to his discredit. The city msrshsl found quite a herd of cattle ruuning at Urge in tha city one day this week, and captured them. It waa ascertained tiiat they were mostly cattle belonging to Warren, that bad broken out of ths Bryant pasture and their impounding by the city marshal caused quite a little stir in the town, snd quite a free expres sion of opfuion ss to the legality of the marshal s sotion. So valuable and numerous were those expreasions that it looked as though this was a city of lawyers. The marshal got any amount of legal advice free, mush more than he could act upon, and bs did tbe wise Uiing by carrying out the provisions of the oidiusuce, posting ths notices and reoUinir. the cattle as required. The city council was called together and iu view of the fact that the cattle had recently accideniily got out of tbe pasture it wat agreed to allow the cat tle to be released upon settlement with the marshal for Ins services and for the feed furnished. Mr. Bryant agreed to this and the eattle were re leased from custody and returned to the paature field. The school entertainment last Fri day evening, closing the eight-mouth's term of school here, was held io tbe upper story of the school building which was handsomely decorated and carefully seated for the occasion. It was one of those entertainments in which everyone felt an interest aud to which everyone tried to go, the result being that the bouse was well nuta with a good-natured and appreciative audience, and tbe exercises well, your correspondent has frequently aliened school exhibitions but does nut remem ber having attended any where every scholar's part was performed in so sat isfactory a manner. .-The concert reci tations given were splendidly rendered the "Creed of tbe Bells being given by twelve little girls with an intona tion, that showed a great deal of prac tice and could scarcely have been ex celled, iu fact, it waa a remarkable performance.
