Then be charms her with his grace aud the beauty of , his dancing, whisper love messages in nor ternned ears for well she knows with whom she i dancing and circling ever nearer and nearer to the outer edge of the company he suddenly gives a whistle, and his men appear in a moment and dash off with the prize, the leader covering their retreat by a fusillade of fire arms which the villagers dare not return, being too much cowed by the bandit's daring. He Was a great pedestrian, and took long tramps every morning. When he was in Washington I met him one morning on the steps of the Capitol. With me was a young congressman from Tennes see, whom the great novelist had offended by his boorishness. "That morning Dickens was in great good humor and full of talk. 'I have,' said he, 'found an almost exact counter part of Little Nell.' 'Little Nell who? queried the Tennesseean. Dickens looked him over from head to foot and from foot to bead before he snorted out, 'My Little Nell.' 'Oh,' said theTennesseean, 'I didnt know you had your daughter with you.' The cat placed itself ou the outside sill of my win dow, near to a pine tree. A bird presently lit on the pine tree, no doubt not observing the cat The cat fixed its attention on the bird. The cat's eyes were widely opened and shone with a peculiar bright ness; its head was raised and intent; the fur on its neck and about its face 6lowly stood up, as if electrified. Except for this rising of the fur and a certain intensity of life in the whole utbtudo of the beast, it was as still as if cut from stone. The bird quivered, trembled, looked fixedly at the cat, and finally, with a feeble shake of the wings, fell toward the cat, which boundod to seize it. A lady tells me that she "does not be lieve that cats can charm birds, be cause she has seen a cat trying to charm a parrot, and the bird, greatly alarmed, scolded loudly.'' This proves nothing; the parrot in general, or more probably that particular par rot, did not prove a good subject for the mesmeric power. I have seen people who cannot be hypnotized. The man who' is quite at ease in bis office bashfulness is most often an attribute of the male sex becomes self conscious in the draw ing room and very shy. Although ca pable of joining in the conversation, his witty remark is forestalled because he Is too slow in giving utterance to it or too timid to bear bis own voice. Tbe ordinary action of his brain is inhibited by his self consciousness. Tbe second cause is emotion. Tbe extreme bash fulness of many men when they are in love is proverbial, and the surprisingly few married men who suffer from bash fulness is noteworthy. These causes are, however, usually in sufficient to product bashfulness, bnt there must be some further necessary condition.. Many conditions predispose to it e. g., a highly nervous tempera ment, deficient moral courage, with which is associated lack of self assertion. These may be regarded as constitutional causes. .". Another predisposing cause is defect ive education. The general education may have been neglected, or the want of opportunities of acquiring self confi dence in society may have been experi enced.
