To tho Editor of the Journal There has been a good deal written of late, In rogard to building good roads and patronizing home industries. One of tho home Industries that might be worked to good advantage in the building of good roads and streets, and of benefit to a number of nnnnln I of the state, Is the making of Belgian paving blocks, of Oregon stone. These stone blocks have proved themselves, in all cases, to be superior to every other in point of wear, outlasting all otlier paving, enduring more than three times as long as the bonded porlod. Besides, thla 1h a local in dustry of groat benefit to Portland Prom 1906 until two years ago certain road meeting held In Road' one to two Inches of a cement cushion District No. 7 on tho lGth day of under them, and grouted with cement January, 1915, at which suld meet- between, It would form a loud that lug a motion was carried to set asldo would hint 50 years without repairs, thero were from l:o to U.0 skilled workmen employed getting out Mono .. k...i.. ., .1 iriMit .and sewers. iur "i n".t Of that number over twenty built homes for themselves; ninny moro im.l boiieht lots Biid wreo preparing to build, nnd there was over 270 people to feed and clot no irom in i,,riinn.i nuil vicinity. At Blllll'fi V .v.. - there 1ms not boon nny stone used for nearly two years, nil uioso moo and most of their families have had to leave the Btate. rick has been brought In to take the place of stone In Portland, from adjoining 'states. Brick has a life of only about one fourth tho life of htono, and Is only 15 cents per cubic yard less In price. All roads leading out of Portland, for the matter of 20 tulles will prob able be surfaced. Why not use stone, blocks Instead of the cho..per clns of paving materials, which would have to bo renewed every few yearsT If stono wero used on the present crushed rock foundation, with from o Inches of a cement cushion from 75 cents to $1 per yurd more ilmn tho cheauost cIubh of paving Tliero are two Improvements com ing mi In Portland nnd vicinity r w namely: Tho approach to tho Inter state brldgo and the Improvement of tho cunt end of tho Broadwuy brldgo. Both places should tiavo the most substantial roadways that could bo built, to liihuro tho public the best means of trafJIc In all sorts of weath er. Why not pattern them after Fourth street, with i;tone In the center and wooden tilocks on the Bides. It makes tho Ideal street for all classes of traffic, under all w a ther conditions, nnd they aro both Oregon products, nnd arc tho cheap est In the end. One of tho reasons that stone I not moro used In Oregon Is because It Is rcn on a narrow margin of profit, rnd It., makers can r.ot afford tho advertising cumpalgns that the patent pnvlng concerns employ, nor biro boosters to boost for their pav ing.
