The center moved from anti quated facilities in Villard Hall last term to a 6,000-square-foot, fully renovated facility in the west wing of Allen Hall’s ground floor. The John L. Hulteng Student Ser vices Center, financed by a sepa rate private gift, was opened at the same time next door. Carolyn Silva Chambers, pres ident of Chambers Communica tions Corp., has had a long histo ry of involvement with the University. Chambers Communi cations Corp. owns KEZI televi sion station in Eugene and six ca ble television systems on the West Coast. Chambers graduated with a de gree in accounting in 1953, has served on the University of Ore gon Foundation Board of f LAURA GOSS/Emerald Carolyn Silva Chambers attend ed the dedication for the neiv electronic media center in Allen Hall on Thursday. Trustees and is co-chair of the Oregon Campaign. “I hope that students will be able to have more versatility and not just study print, but electron ic news production as well,” Chambers said. She hopes the school will continue to upgrade equipment and provide quality instruction in the future. “We are very happy that she demonstrated her support and confidence in the school,” said Tim Gleason, interim dean of the journalism school. Her previous gifts to the jour nalism school include two fully endowed professorships in ad vertising and broadcast journal ism. Jim Upshaw, KEZI distin guished professor of broadcast journalism, said the school’s four- or five-year project to up date its electronic production fa cilities will give students a chance to learn about and use some of the technology common in the workplace. “The purpose is to provide samples of newer technology, not to fill a building with it,” Up shaw said. The new Carolyn Silva Cham bers Electronic Media Center now has six post-production editing bays and a new audio control room. The department has one non-linear editing ma chine on loan, and there are plans to continue to acquire more equipment, Upshaw said. Along with additions to im prove the equipment for broad cast journalism, further plans are in the works to refurbish Allen Hall, including a new entrance to the building, Gleason said. Si?
