OCA: Twelve weeks enough time ■ Continued from Page 1 for the anti-abortion initiative and about 40,000 for the "Family Act. ” Of concern to pro-choice advo cate Diane Duke, member of the Pro-Choice Oregon steering com mittee, is that the anti-abortion initiative doesn’t provide for ex ceptions in cases of incest or rape or if the continuation of a preg nancy would result in ending the ability of the woman to become pregnant in the future. Williams said he believes cases of incest and rape would not be subject to the initiative because abortions in the first 12 weeks would remain legal and give enough time for these cases to be taken care of. He said he believes 12 weeks is enough time for women to figure out their situa tion. The “Family Act” would out law legal marriages for same-sex partners, a situation that Harris said reflects the same agenda as previous OCA initiatives in 1992 and 1994, which tried to require government disapproval of homo sexuality. This time, however, she said she believes the term homo sexual has purposefully been left out. She said Basic Rights Oregon, a group formed after the 1992 cam paign, is out of debt, has raised some money to work with and is ready. “We are prepared to fight this one more time, and we will beat them,” she said. The ACLU opposes both mea sures since they attack individual freedom and the right to privacy, said David Fidanque, Oregon ACLU executive director. He said he believes abortion decisions should be made by families and not by the government or the OCA. Regarding the “Family Act,” he agreed with Harris’ opinions in addition to noting the ACLU’s continued push in lobbying the Oregon Legislature to prohibit em ployment discrimination based on sexual orientation. During the 1997 Oregon Legisla tive session, such a measure passed through the House but did n’t make it out of the Senate in time, he said. Regardless of whether the OCA’s “Family Act” is put on the ballot and passes, Fi danque said the ACLU will con tinue to push for the same type of anti-discrimination law. ASUO: McCartan wants lower tuition 8 Continued from Page 1 a lack of cultural diversity, but also a lack in other ways — we don’t have a disabled representa tive, for example,” she said. “I’d also like to get representatives from the dorms.” It’s important to use existing re sources to make wider use of cur rent University programs, she --- said. McCartan said she plans to publish a campus resource book resembling the yellow pages, which would include resources such as math tutoring and reli gious organizations. “I think our campus is awe some,” she said. "We just have to teach students how to utilize it.” McCartan said her administra tion would work hard to lobby at the state and federal levels to low er tuition and increase the avail ability of student loans and grants. She is also against raising student incidental fees. “The final say, however, is in the hands of the students,” she said. 1 Easter Weekend Services Saturday evening, 8:00pm — Easter Vigil Sunday morning, 9:45am — New Celebration Worship Sunday morning, 11:00am — Flowering of the Cross and Traditional Worship come worship with Pastor Dan...
