Lachkar, Mooney declare bid for presidency on SPA ticket By Carolyn Lamberson Of tlw Emerald Sarah Lachkar and Jodie Mooney, stressing diversity and the importance of equal student representation in government, have announced their can didacy for the ASUO presiden tial and vice-presidential positions. I^chkar and Mooney, runn ing on the Students for a Pro gressive Agenda ticket, each have a year’s experience in stu dent government and said they represent a broad-based selec tion of student groups and in dividual student interests. Lachkar is a junior interna tional relations major with a double minor in business and French. Currently she is the ASUO assistant finance coor dinator. is involved with the Sister University Project and is a member of Pi Beta Phi Sorority. Her involvement with the financial aspect of government will be an asset to her can didacy. she said. “My work as the assistant finance coordinator has put me in contact with many programs. I am able to see what each groups’ needs are and what the individual student’s needs are.” Lachkar said. Mooney is a second-year law student and currently chairs the Incidental Fee Committee. “I know the budget process inside and out,” she said, ad ding her experience as a law student gives her insight into state law that a non-law student would not have. Mooney also stressed her non-traditonal student status as being important in bringing diversity to the SFA ticket. The fact that she is a member of the gay community will help her in representing minority groups on campus fairly, she said. One issue Lachkar and Mooney would like to see stressed in student government is student empowerment. “A lot of students don’t realize the power conferred to them by state law,” Mooney said, citing the fact the ASUO is one of a few student govern ments in the country that allocates its own fees through the incidental fee process. “This is one of the most powerful student governments in the country, and that is precious to us,” Mooney said. “To lose that, even incremen tally, would be a real disservice to students.” Lachkar and Mooney have worked closely this year through the budget process and said they work well together and complement one another. “We have a good working relationship,” Mooney said. "I tend to be a good administrator Some people have said 1 have run the IFC this year like a machine, just cranking groups through (the budget hearings). But I’m good behind a desk, and as a vice president that’s real important. “Sarah on the other hand is better qualified to deal with the public,” she added.
