Frichette, Cooper announce candidacy as co-presidents By Carolyn I.amberson Of the Kmrrald With the ASUO elections rapidly taking shape, the presidential and vice presidential race is facing a new and different twist. Steve Frichette and Donna Cooper have announced their intention to run for ASUO office as co-presidential candidates. The reasoning behind this move is the president and vice presi dent’s jobs are equally difficult and should be treated equally, Frichette said. “We have been working together since June,” Cooper said. “And we have come to the conclusion that we can work equally as a team. The jobs are full of responsibility. We want to divide up that responsibility and rely on each other.” They don’t see this decision as being a problem as long as the respective duties are divid ed up and are completed, Frichette said. The Constitution Court will have to determine if what he and Cooper have pro posed is allowable, he said. Frichette and Cooper are run ning independently of any political party. They see this as an asset to their campaign because they are not bound by any party ideology and allows voters a larger choice when it comes to election time, Cooper said. “It's one thing to start your own coalition.“ Frichette said. “Frankly, they’re a dime a dozen. Any four students can get together and form a political party. But what we’re running on is experience and how well we work together.” Fast experience in student government and other ad ministrative areas is something Krichette and Cooper believe is vitally important to any cam paign or administration, they said. Krichette is currently the ASUO University Affairs coor dinator. He has been involved in several committees, in cluding his work on wheelchair accessibility, library expansion and the Dean's Committee on Substance Abuse. Me also serves as the Associated Students Presiden tial Advisory Council coor dinator. is a member of Sigma Alpha Epsilon and is a former Interfraternity Council vice president. Cooper is currently the ASUO events coordinator. She has been active in ASPAC and has helped organize peace week, the street faire, the brown bag forums and the substance abuse symposium. She served as the director of the Women’s Referral and Resource (’enter from September 1985 to January 1987 and serves on the United States Steve Frichette and Donna (hooper Student Association board of directors. Cooper and P'richette have worked frequently with the University administration and think the relationship between the ASIJO and the administra tion should be improved. Frichette said. “We know the administration is not acting out of malice toward students, and there is no need for there to In? any hostile feelings toward the administra tion,” Cooper said. Frichette noted that the two have worked together on several projects this year and have a solid working relationship. Although the Executive could coerce favorable deci sions from members through threat of removal, the court found no reason to believe the Executive had any intention of doing so.
