Letters Classified I am concerned that the University Senate is knuckling under to the pressure to build the Riverfront Research Park. On March 11 they approved classified research, as long as it is not for weapons. David Thaler asked to have "weapons" defined before the motion; Olum responded. "The problem is on the other side. If they can't tell us. they can’t do it.” This is excessively vague. If we allow the people who want to build killing machines to define killing machines they will of course tell us it is something other than what they’re doing. Without a solid definition of our own we will have no way to refuse them. Once they’re here it will be next to impossible to control the research escalation: The precedent will have been set and it is, after all. "classified” research and not something we can let just everybody know about. Eugene is my home. I love it. 1 want to see it prosper. Not, however, this way. The Nuremberg Trials established our responsibility to humanity to control our govern ment. Our government, like the Nazis, is indiscriminately kill ing people. This classified research is about making this murder a more efficient process, exactly the Nazi concern at Dachau and Treblinks. The only difference is that the Nazis grouped their victims together to make it easier to dispose of the evidence. Our government won’t make that mistake; they leave them to rot in the fields and in their homes and hide the evidence by pretending it just never happened. A1 Steinberry Eugene Cheers As avid fans of the women’s basketball team, we are ecstatic that the success of the [.ady Ducks is finally opening the eyes of the University student body and the Eugene community. Not to detract from the suc cess of the men's team, but the women deserve more than a last ditch effort by the school’s cheerleading squad. Speaking for ourselves and many of the fans at Wednes day’s opening round NCAA vic tory over Eastern Washington, we feel the cheerleader’s apathetic appearance was a waste of time. The Ducks dominated the game with great plays but the only hurrahs they got were from the crowd. Only during time Open 24 Hours kinko's Great copies. Great people. 860 E. 13th 344-7894 outs did we even notice the cheerleaders since they hiber nated in the corner all night. The women’s fans have sup ported the team the entire season without the cheerleaders, and their ap pearance only showed an "oh,...by the way..." at titude. Hardly a motivator for the fans. This is not to say the cheerleaders have nothing to of fer at a game, but we want either equal time and enthusiasm or none at all. If it's only going to be a fair weather visit gauged on whether or not the women are succeeding, don't do us any favors. If you want to cheer for a great women’s team, just show up in your Levi's, grab a spot in the stands, and yell with us because you’re a fan, not a cheerleader.
