Ethnology °—"*—*** was supposed to find. I knew I was in trouble and I couldn't say. 'Oh. I threw it out the win dow.' I was only 21 years old." he said. The incident occurred a few days after the Soviet invasion of Czechoslovakia, which led Wlx man to believe he would be framed as a Western pro vocateur to detract attention away from the invasion, he said. "The only reason I got out was because an American girl handed out leaflets on Red Square protesting the Soviet's invasion of Czechoslovakia. They didn't need me for an inci dent then." he said. "That was my eye-opener as to what the Soviet society was really like. I've learned from my summer in the Soviet Union what living in the police state was. what not being able to talk to people was like, what being followed waa like, end talking to my (Soviet) relatives, seeing their terror as they knew that as soon as 1 left, the KGB would come talk to them." Wixman said. “In terms of freedom, the Soviet Union has changed little since 1968. My relatives are just as terrified In 1985 as they were in 1968. My visit was not welcome," he said. "My anti-Sovietism was not taught to me in American schools nor passed on to me by my parents, but rather came from a series of very ugly and eye-opening experiences in the Soviet Union," he said. Because Wixman studied linguistics and knew Russian and Bulgarian fluently, he was able to read signs and newspapers as well as unders tand the Soviet radio broad casts. Wixman also can speak Serbo-Croatian ami Macedo nlan. two dialects used in Yugoslavia, along with six other languages. "I could see Soviet citizens literally leave the table on fin ding out that I was an American,” he said. "1 did not know that it was illegal for Soviet citizens to talk to foreigners.” Scholars and tourists are treated extremely well, but that is not what it is like for everyone else, he said. On one occasion. Wixman said a Soviet scholar privately apologized that he would have to denounce Wixman although he and the other Soviet scholars did not believe it, Wixman said. The results of the |oint study with the Soviet scholars will undoubtedly be censored, yet Wixman said he is excited to begin work on the study next month. Wild Pag* • use of extras and location shooting combined with Tak Fu)imolo’i solid cinematography creates a uni que. genuine feeling for the film. Similarly, music is a central part of the film. With a soundtrack that ranges from David Bume and X to The Troggs, Yellowman and Electric Sheep (and musical ap pearances by The Feelies and Sister Carol), the music is as ex pressive of Lulu as her eclectic wardrobe. The beat and the spirit of the songs (and the score by John ('.ale with Laurie Anderson) become an integral part of the spirit of the film. “Something Wild” could very well be Demme’s most suc cessful mainstream film both critically and commercially. Both the marvelous “Melvin and Howard” and the mediocre “Swing Shift" stalled at the box office. But with "Something Wild" the unpredictability might con versely scare safe moviegoers away. That would be their loss, for ‘‘Somethin- -‘Mid” is fascinating and . /ing from the harmla J the dangerous, from engaging to gripping, from a surface survey of its characters and situations to a probe that strips away the surface to reveal the hidden elements. Certainly the most unpredic table of this year’s films. “Something Wild" is one of the best. Plays at Cinema World. Personals PROBLEMS?
