We pretty much dominated.” The win raised the Ducks to 5-7 in dual meet competition Two time Pac-10 champion Mike Erb led the Ducks with a pin of Greg Cheesbrough in the 116-pound match. Erb had no problem piling up six take downs before pinning Cheesbrough at 2:48 in the first round. “I had a good meet," said Erb, who raised his record to 19-5 on the year. "I did a lot of things I have been working on this past week in practice.” Lane Community College transfer Zane Kesey had a strong match, pinning EWSU’s Mike Mohler at 3:28 in the se cond round. Kesey was in con trol from the start, collecting four near-falls in the first period. The win for Kesey was his first at the varsity level. “It was about time he got a win,” said Finley. “He was due and he did a good job tonight.” At 142 pounds, Oregon’s Lorenzo West defeated Tim Saryl by default in the first round. Saryl injured his shoulder as West lifted him off the mat and took him down. “He kind of got careless by putting his head down when he hit the mat. West said. “He was trying to reverse and his hip came up and that’s how he got hurt." Finley pointed out the ef forts of the freshman wrestlers, especially James Terry who decisioned J.R. Caballero by a lopsided score of 18-1. “I was real pleased with our freshman particularly James Terry who wrestled one of his better matches." Other Duck winners includ ed Miles Hancock at 126, Jim Hildebrand at 150, and Charles Nutter at 177. Brett Hamilton and Drew Smetana won by forfeit at 190 and heavyweight. The Ducks' next action is this weekend at the Portland State Invitational Saturday and at home Sunday against Washington State at 2 p.m. Ducks face upset-prone Sun Devils Oregon rolls the top-ranked defense in the Pac-10 Conference into Tempe, Ariz., for a con test Saturday with high-scoring Arizona State. The Ducks will need 40 minutes of effort from a defense that allows only 57.1 points per game to contain two Sun Devils that rank among the conference scoring leaders. Byron Scott, a 6-3 junior guard, and 6-5 for ward Paul Williams have led the Sun Devils to near upsets of the Pac-10’s remaining two undefeated teams, UCLA and Washington State. "Arizona State has two of the finest players in the Pac-10 in Byron Scott and Paul Williams," says Oregon coach Jim Haney, who hasn’t beaten the Sun Devils in Tempe since February, 1979. “They have been affected by the fact that they have a new coach, but I don't think that's any longer the case.” The Sun Devils, under first-year coach Bob Weinhauer, have posted a 9-9 season mark. They could conceivably be leading the Pac-10 standings, but one-point losses to UCLA (87-86) at home and Washington State (75-74) on the r road dropped them to fourth in the conference with a 3-3 record. Considering last year’s 0-5 conference start, that is quite an improvement. Weinhauer’s main weapons thus far have been Scott and Williams. Scott is averaging 19.6 points, four assists and two steals per game, while Williams is hitting 17.9 points per game and adding 7.1 rebounds a contest. After those two, the Sun Devil ranks thin measureably. Center Corey McMullen, 6-8, is known more for his defense and rebounding. He is the second-best shot blocker in the con ference and is averaging 5.6 rebounds per game, but he averages a paltry 3.2 points. “Oregon has the one ingredient we don’t have — a big kid, a solid big man in the middle of the floor,” Weinhauer says. “There’s not a better big man in the league at the center posi tion than Rasmussen. He should be a strong candidate for the Olympic Trials.” The game will be the NBCTTVs Pac-10 game of the week and will be broadcast in the Eugene area beginning at 4 p.m. 1 For your swimming, racquetball, tennis, running, or jogging classes come to Trackside for your STUDENT DISCOUNT.
