Braun gets removed from IFC By Richard Burr Of th« Emarak) An Incidental Fee Committee member was removed from office Thursday for failing to fulfill his duties. IFC chairer Bart Hill declared vacant the position of Rick Braun, a second-year law stu dent, under a section of the ASUO Constitution that specifies that any elected officials failing to fulfill their duties for three weeks may be removed. Braun failed to fulfill his duties for the required time as of Wednesday, Hill said at the weekly IFC meeting. “I have not seen posted office hours," he said. Hill asked other committee members to help programs for which Braun was a liaison. Pro grams are assigned a committee liaison for budget hearings. “It’s about time," said David Gibson, ASUO vice president of adminstration and finance, about the removal. Gibson said he is happy the committee will be getting a person to fulfill the position’s duties. ASUO Pres. C.J. Balfe said he will appoint Braun s replacement today. ASUO presidents are empowered to appoint replacements to va cant elected posts. The appointment is subject to approval by Student University Affairs Board. “I’d been expecting Rick to resign," Balfe said. A busy law school schedule had been in terfering with Braun’s committee respon sibilities, he said. Braun was unavailable for comment. The removal comes four days before IFC budget hearings begin. A similar situation con fronted the committee last year when Pam Jor dan, a former IFC committee member, resigned shortly before budget hearings because she could no longer devote time to the committee In other committee action, the IFC approv ed an $8,000 loan to the crew team The loan will be used to buy an eight person boat with a speaker system, said Bren da Thornton, crew team spokesperson. The team currently rents boats for practice and must depend on opposing teams to furnish them with boats at meets, she added The IFC is not in the banking business and should not set such a precedent, which other programs might follow, said committee member Jeff Nudelman. The loan is '‘frivolous" because it will benefit solely crew team members and not the rest of the University, ad ded committee member Mary Alice Holmes. The approval does not set a bad precedent because there is a credit committee to handle loans, Hill said The ASUO Credit Committee can make loans up to $1,000. The loan approval also allows the IFC to do something positive instead of maintaining its negative image. Hill added. "I don’t care about our image," Nudelman responded. The team will repay the loan in annual $2,000 installments starling in July. The team already has raised enough money to meet the first payment, Thornton said. In other committee business, Gibson said members of a new group to replace Physically Limited Union of Students will be asking to enter the budgeting process late. The PLUS budget was frozen this year because the group was inactive. The committee also rejected a request from Muslim Students Association for a phone Space policy defined Programs housed in the EMU will face a greater chance of having their space revoked because of an EMU Housing Committee policy approved Thursday. The policy provides guidelines for revoking pro gram space, which the com mittee has lacked in the past, said committee member Alan Scearce, author of the policy. Programs almost were en sured "eternal" EMU occupa tion after their space requests were approved except for a year-end committee review, he said. The policy says programs may have space reduced or revoked for continuous failure to pick up mail, failure to main tain office hours and ‘‘other activity," failure to answer a committee inquiry or a misuse of space The committee also unanimously approved a new space allocation policy which specifies criteria for re questing building space, something the old policy did not have, Scearce said. The two policies will be presented at the next EMU Board meeting for approval. ASUO positions open Applications are being ac cepted through Monday for four positions on the ASUO Elections Board Board members will decide election rules and help run the ASUO elections, says Paul Rudinsky, ASUO executive vice president Board members will receive a $150 stipend for their work, he says. Correction An article in Thurs day's Emerald incorrect ly stated that each EMU sports club may be cut $1,100 if each does not raise 15 percent of its budget through fundraising. The suggestion was for each sport to raise 15 percent of its budget through fundraising — if it is not already — which would save EMU Club Sports $1,100, says Dan Cohen, EMU budget committee member. The $1,100 savings could be given to clubs that fundraise 50 percent or more of their budget, not given as $1,100 grants to clubs that meet the requirement as stated in the article, he adds.
