Iran marks embassy takeover cursing ‘Great Satan America’ TEHRAN, Iran (AP) — Tens of thousands of schoolchildren chanting "Death to America!" marched to the former U S. Embassy today, marking the third anniversary of the seizure of the American hostages From kindergarteners to teen-agers, they cursed the "Great Satan America" in a well-orchestrated demonstra tion that featured the burning of a U S flag and exhortations by Molsem clergyman Mussavi Khoeini to follow their elders' examples He said taking over the "spy den" was a "victory of oppressed people over a super power " The banners and posters had slogans such as "all our troubles are because of America" and "The U S A is condemned to death ” Scores of Iranian revolu tionary guards carrying Kalashnikov automatic rifles patrolled in and around the 27-acre compound seized by Iranian militants on Nov. 4, 1979 The last group of the hostages was released Jan 20, 1981 A small group of officially in vited American journalists was allowed inside the compound, but most chose to stick to a rooftop for a vantage point They were warned against taking pictures inside the com pound Rumors abound in Tehran about the use being made of the old U S enclave A Western di plomatic source in Tehran said screams and shooting have been heard from the grounds, indicating it may be used as a prison Reporters estimated about 50,000 people were at today s march Hundreds of thousands of protesters used to turn out dur ing the 444-day hostage crisis Shouts of "Margh bar Amerika!” — “Death to America!" would fill the air The Islamic Guidance Min istry, the public relations arm of Ayatollah Ruhoilah Khomeini's regime, took a small group of American reporters to the cemetery outside Tehran Wednesday to give them a foretaste of the embassy rally U.S. supports U.N. vote on Falklands forcing Britain to discuss sovereignty UNITED NATIONS (AP) - Despite strong British objec tions, the United States joined the General Assembly majority Thursday in calling for Britain and Argentina to renew nego tiations on sovereignty over the Falkland Islands The vote was 90-12 in favor of the non-binding resolution, sponsored by Argentina and 19 other Latin American countries There were 52 abstentions No specific time limit was set for resumption of talks on sovereignty over the remote South Atlantic archipelago, which Britain reclaimed from Argentine invaders after a 74-day undeclared war that ended June 14 U S. officials said Pres Ronald Reagan personally authorized the American delegation's "yes” vote in a move toward healing a rift in Washington's relations with Latin America They said he felt the resolution contained no threat to Britain's vital interests British Ambassador Sir John Thomson said before the vote that it was ‘‘impossible to accept a call for negotiations as if the Argentine invasion had never occurred " Deputy U S. Ambassador Kenneth Adelman told the 157-member assembly the Unit ed States supports "any realis tic diplomatic initiative which will put a just end" to the con U.S. Marines enter Beirut, patrolling Christian sector BEIRUT. Lebanon (AF) - US Marines armed with machine guns, rifles and pistols entered east Beirut tor the first time Thursday, patrolling the Christian militia heartland in jeeps and drawing a few cheers of “God bless America “ The four-jeep convoy, with the Stars and Stripes fluttering from radio antennas, rolled out of the Marine base in a predominantly Moslem west Beirut and headed to join French and Italian peacekeepers and Lebanese army troops in the east The 14 Marines returned three hours later after comple ting their first mobile patrol since they arrived Sept 29 fol lowing the massacre of Palestinians in two west Beirut camps by Christian militiamen from the east The Marines said they encountered no problems in their two circuits of a corner of east Beirut. But they admitted being a little bewildered at their first real trip into the city. "But there will be no expansion of the U S. Marine role until there is full agreement between the Lebanese, Syrian and Israeli governments on disengagement and withdrawal of foreign forces, including the PLO," said the official, who asked to be anonymous. flict "The cost, in blood and treasure, to both Argentina and the United Kingdom dictates that force must never again be used in this dispute," he said "We assume, therefore, in sup porting this resolution, a shared responsibility for preventing the use of force in the future ” Adelman said after the vote that the United States was not taking sides in the sovereignty question 8 new cases of bad burger ATLANTA (AP) - Eight new cases of a bacterial disease that causes bloody diarrhea have been reported in six states in people who ate hamburger meat, the national Centers for Disease Control said Thursday The eight raised the total to 81 reported cases of the disease since it was identified earlier this year, said Dr. Mitchell Cohen, a CDC epidemiologist “I suspect that the organism is an organism of cattle And when the cattle is slaughtered, the organism is spread to the meat,” Cohen said "It's proba bly — considering the amount of hamburger eaten in the country — not a public health problem " Two initial outbreaks of the disease in Oregon and Michigan were associated with consump tion of hamburgers from McDonald's Corp. restaurants But only one in 1,000 people who ate hamburgers at McDonald's during the two outbreaks became ill. FLU VACCINATION Vaccinations for influenza are currently being given at the University Student Health Center every Wednesday. Thursday and Friday from 8:00 to 9:00 a m., and will continue throughout the term. Students may receive the vaccine at a cost of $2.50 per injection. Faculty and staff are charged $3.50 per injection. Persons who have never received flu vaccine and who are under the age of 28 years need two injections of vaccine four week apart. Persons over the age of 28 need only one injection If persons received one injection of the 1978-79, 1979-80 or 1980-81 vaccine, they would need only one injection this year. Annual flu immunizations are especially advised for people with an increased risk of complications from lower respiratory tract infections, including (1) Persons 65 years old and older (2) Persons of any age over five months with any of the following: heart disease, compromised lung functions, chronic kidney disease, diabetes, chronic severe anemia, and conditions which compromise immune mechanisms.
