U.S. supports U.N. vote on Falklands
forcing Britain to discuss sovereignty
UNITED NATIONS (AP) -
Despite strong British objec
tions, the United States joined
the General Assembly majority
Thursday in calling for Britain
and Argentina to renew nego
tiations on sovereignty over the
Falkland Islands
The vote was 90-12 in favor of
the non-binding resolution,
sponsored by Argentina and 19
other Latin American countries
There were 52 abstentions
No specific time limit was set
for resumption of talks on
sovereignty over the remote
South Atlantic archipelago,
which Britain reclaimed from
Argentine invaders after a
74-day undeclared war that
ended June 14
U S. officials said Pres
Ronald Reagan personally
authorized the American
delegation's "yes” vote in a
move toward healing a rift in
Washington's relations with
Latin America They said he felt
the resolution contained no
threat to Britain's vital interests
British Ambassador Sir John
Thomson said before the vote
that it was ‘‘impossible to
accept a call for negotiations as
if the Argentine invasion had
never occurred "
Deputy U S. Ambassador
Kenneth Adelman told the

BEIRUT. Lebanon (AF) -
US Marines armed with
machine guns, rifles and pistols
entered east Beirut tor the first
time Thursday, patrolling the
Christian militia heartland in
jeeps and drawing a few cheers
of “God bless America “
The four-jeep convoy, with
the Stars and Stripes fluttering
from radio antennas, rolled out
of the Marine base in a
predominantly Moslem west
Beirut and headed to join
French and Italian
peacekeepers and Lebanese
army troops in the east
The 14 Marines returned
three hours later after comple

since they arrived Sept 29 fol

Palestinians in two west Beirut
camps by Christian militiamen
from the east
The Marines said they
encountered no problems in
their two circuits of a corner of
east Beirut. But they admitted
being a little bewildered at their
first real trip into the city.
"But there will be no
expansion of the U S. Marine
role until there is full agreement
between the Lebanese, Syrian
and Israeli governments on
disengagement and withdrawal
of foreign forces, including the
PLO," said the official, who
asked to be anonymous.

"The cost, in blood and
treasure, to both Argentina and
the United Kingdom dictates
that force must never again be
used in this dispute," he said
"We assume, therefore, in sup

responsibility for preventing the
use of force in the future ”
Adelman said after the vote
that the United States was not

8 new cases
of bad burger
ATLANTA (AP) - Eight new
cases of a bacterial disease that
causes bloody diarrhea have
been reported in six states in
people who ate hamburger
meat, the national Centers for
Disease Control said Thursday
The eight raised the total to 81
reported cases of the disease
since it was identified earlier
this year, said Dr. Mitchell
Cohen, a CDC epidemiologist
“I suspect that the organism
is an organism of cattle And
when the cattle is slaughtered,
the organism is spread to the
meat,” Cohen said "It's proba
bly — considering the amount of
hamburger eaten in the country
— not a public health problem "
Two initial outbreaks of the
disease in Oregon and Michigan
were associated with consump
tion of hamburgers from
McDonald's Corp. restaurants
But only one in 1,000 people
who ate hamburgers at
McDonald's during the two
outbreaks became ill.
