Mm__ Continued from Diversity be based on having a variety of assets whose yields of earning are not dependent on each other,” he says. Successfully broadening Oregon's export base will require active recruitment of businesses, Grove says, and in planning recruitment strategy a prime consideration should be, "What does Oregon have to sell?” The quality, availability and costs of natural and human resources and transportation systems — as well as Oregon’s distance from the market for a company’s product — should be prime considera tions in deciding which industries to recruit, Grove says The types of firms that would respond to Oregon’s resources are those “where transport costs and goods location are not terribly important. High-value-per-volume (i.e., expensive) products and those that can be produced almost anywhere are best suited to the region,” Grove says “We need labor-intensive industries, expanding industries, firms that interact well with the environ ment and personal tastes," he adds, specifically mentioning high technology and secondary wood products manufacturing firms as possibilities Tom Moreland of the Lane Economic Founda tion says ‘a well diversified economy might contain research groups backed by grant money, regional headquarters of service-related businesses such as insurance, manufacturers of parts for energy ex ploration businesses, manufacturers of export com modities such as furniture and furniture parts " Some large, some small, and some medium sized companies should be attracted, Moreland says, so one company — like Weyerhaeuser in Springfield — doesn't affect the economy in such a dramatic way. "The small businesses that are needed here are those that have big ideas and are willing to develop a market outside of just Lane County We need people with creative ideas to provide jobs here," Moreland adds "I think the way to diversify this economy is to look at what resources are available and figure out what sorts of industries and processes are possible" considering Oregon's distance to certain markets, says Bill Wooten, the Lane Economic Development Council's director "This is an energy-rich area," Wooten says, adding that "we can invest public money into the production of energy and export the surplus to energy-poor areas at a profit The hydro potential can probably be quadrupled, and geothermal development is a substantial possibility Putting public credit into energy conservation programs (i.e., weatherization and solarization) would create jobs and conserve energy “There is a lot in the secondary manufacturing of wood products that could be happening here, and the public has almost an obligation to invest into the processing, packaging and selling of wood products,” Wooten says There is a wholesale market potential for local craftspeople, he says, and "everyone would like to see the computer and electronics industry develop here " He adds, however, that the electronics in dustry has "a prima donna attitude; they want to be courted and flattered " CLASSIFIED ADS CAN BE PLACED AT ODE OFFICE 300 EMU UO BOOKSTORE STAMP COUNTER EMU MAIN DESK DEADLINES: Ads must be placee by 1 pm one day prior to publication Ads that are to appear m Monday s paper must be in by 1 pm Fnday RATES: Rates are 15 cants par word tor the first day and 12 cents per word for consecu tive days me ad is rur without change $1.50 minimum lor the first Insert ton 51.20 minimum tor consecutive insertions There is NO refund for ad cancellations The ODE cannot be responsible tor more than one day's incorrect advertising irsemo' Tnn ODE s liability tor typographica errors ncor rect insertions or omissions in advertising published shall be limited soleiy to the cancellation ot charges tor such portion ot space occupied by the error It you ad appears incorrectly, call 686-4343 bet ore 1 pm for correction in the next day s issue The ODE will not knowingly accept advertis ing which in any manner denigrates or unjustly excludes members ot any age sex race color ‘ national, religious or sexual orientation PAYMENT All ads must be paid for in advance unless a billing agreement has been estab lished with us LAFLER SILKSCREEN Custom printed t-shirts 343-2306 114 2012 FAMOUS MID-EASTERN KING DAVID'S FALAFEL vegi-pocket sandwiches are availa ble at the EMU cafeteria NOW!1 Delivered daily in limited quantities EXPERIENCE IT1' 997 2-5 COMIC BOOKS Largest selection of old and new comics in Oregon 2.000 plus at 25 cents each Receive new comics 2 weeks ahead ot Eugene Emerald City Comics 770 E. 13th 345-2568 64 2-5 Sony FM Walkman Excellent condition scarcely used Best offer over $75 Tim. 485-97012-9 PIONEER car stereo system tape deck/receiver booster Clarion speakers Factory warranty. $425/make offer Paul. 686-0755 2-8 CARVER M-400 AMP 200W $200 Carver M-4000 Preamp $800 both under factory warranty.,484-4251 eves_2-8 TWO YEAR OLD Technics SA-300 receiver 35 wpc $150 484-4904_2-5 SKI BOOTS for sale Good condition Cheap - only $30 Call Jan, 344-5484 2-3 X-C Ski Rental $5 per day $9 weekend HAWKEYES The Good Life 343-9564 5th S tract Public Mark at 788WH HOMEMADE breads, soups, and desserts Keystone Cafe, 395 West 5th Now open Friday and Saturday eves, 6-10 pm 2-3 Page 10 Section A ESCORT RADAR DETECTORS Excellent accessories included $215 Call Mitch 687-2097_2-?
