SUPERDUCK! Mystery mascot makes merriment for homecoming By ALAN WRIGHT Of th* Emaratd There's one duck from Eugene that won't be flying south for the winter Soon you may see him, a big green and yellow crea ture with a huge bill and wild flaming hair that curls down over his bright yellow cape A giant University of Oregon insignia emblazons his chest, just above his secret "ducko belt,'' which supplies his magical power Sound like a strange bird7 Have no tear, SUPERDUCK ts here! "Superduck can go any where and do anything Superduck is a friend to all," says Wayne Alan Sipe, the man behind the mask Sipe, also known as the Wizard of Magic, says that "mirth, merriment, and levi ty" is Superduck's phi losophy The powerful winged-wonder will appear suddenly anywhere at any time to hype the crowd' and then somehow disappear Sipe and Eugene Down town Mall manager Ray Mclver created Superduck Public relations specialist Mclver has promoted other sensational personalities like Santa Claus and Mr Pump kin He says Superduck will be Oregon's mascot and spirit leader Superduck not only will highlight athletic events and Oregon Marching Band appearances but also will appear mysteriously at campus events, Mclver says Superduck also will quack his way to community events, he adds Mclvers stresses the fowl's mysteriousness Super duck's enigmatic flying patterns confuse his crea tors they don't know where he'll land next Mclver says he got the idea while watching an old Daffy Duck cartoon with his son The next day he noticed a duck bill and wig in a mall store At that point, Mclver decided to create Super duck, a creature "that was comical and yet not a buf foon, just a lovable character."
