SUPERDUCK!
Mystery mascot
makes merriment
for homecoming
By ALAN WRIGHT
Of th* Emaratd
There's one duck from
Eugene that won't be flying
south for the winter
Soon you may see him, a
big green and yellow crea
ture with a huge bill and wild
flaming hair that curls down
over his bright yellow cape A
giant University of Oregon
insignia emblazons his
chest, just above his secret
"ducko belt,'' which supplies
his magical power
Sound like a strange bird7
Have no tear, SUPERDUCK
ts here!
"Superduck can go any
where and do anything
Superduck is a friend to all,"
says Wayne Alan Sipe, the
man behind the mask
Sipe, also known as the
Wizard of Magic, says that
"mirth, merriment, and levi
ty" is Superduck's phi
losophy The powerful
winged-wonder will appear
suddenly anywhere at any
time to hype the crowd' and
then somehow disappear
Sipe and Eugene Down
town Mall manager Ray
Mclver created Superduck
Public relations specialist
Mclver has promoted other
sensational personalities like
Santa Claus and Mr Pump
kin He says Superduck will
be Oregon's mascot and
spirit leader
Superduck not only will
highlight athletic events and
Oregon Marching Band
appearances but also will
appear mysteriously at
campus events, Mclver says
Superduck also will quack
his way to community events,
he adds
Mclvers stresses the fowl's
mysteriousness Super
duck's enigmatic flying
patterns confuse his crea
tors they don't know where
he'll land next
Mclver says he got the idea
while watching an old Daffy
Duck cartoon with his son
The next day he noticed a
duck bill and wig in a mall
store At that point, Mclver
decided to create Super
duck, a creature "that was
comical and yet not a buf
foon, just a lovable
character."
Mclver called on Sandy

official mascot.

professor of theatre, for help
They sat on the idea and
eventually hatched Super

Superduck not only will
help lift spirits at the budget
clipped University but also
will promote the mall, Mclver
says
“Superduck will get the
community more involved in
downtown and downtown
more involved in the com
munity,'' Mclver says
Superduck makes his
debut tonight at the mail's
old-fashioned Homecoming
Pep Rally, starting at 5:45
p m in the central plaza He'll
fly in for the Arizona game
The rally, financed by the
Eugene Downtown Mall
Association, is the first of a
fundraising series for the
non-funded marching band
“There are hundreds of
things you can do with
Superduck,“ Mclver claims,
with visions of Superduck
dolls, bewigged and billed
Superduck fans soaring
through his head
“It takes a special person
to be in a costume like
Superduck,“ Sipe says
"You have to animate your
self ”
The duck invites all fans to
attend the Oregon-Arizona
homecoming game on
Saturday He promises a
show that displays his "mys
terious, magical" powers
"Drink your milk and eat
plenty of quackers," Super
duck quacked
