Packwood says The Food and Drug Adminis tration is currently in charge of regulating and distributing DMSO in Oregon Dr Stanley Jacob associate professor of surgery at the University's Health Science Center in Portland has per formed tests with DMSO since the early 1960s He has found the drug effective for relieving pain caused by arm and leg in juries arthritis and burns DMSO also aids in the treat I merit of eye disease, spinal cord injuries, and even cancer, he says Despite Jacob s research, the FDA has remained cautious about the use of the drug Not until 1978 did the FDA authorize physicians to dispense DMSO — and only tor a rare bladder dis ease known as intestinal cysti tis But now. because of peculiarities in prescription laws doctors are tree to pre scribe the drug tor any disorder that they believe warrants the use of DMSO Chuck Williams, a representative for Dr Jacob, says that physicians "have a very wide latitude' in prescrib ing the drug If Pack wood s bill passes a committee made up of mostly pharmacists and physicians will prepare regulations and moni tor the distribution of DMSO throughout the state, bypassing the federal regulation process, Williams says FDA representatives continue to insist that their reason for strict regulation of DMSO is not to dispute Jacob s research Industrial-strength DMSO (used as a degreaser and paint thin ner) has been readily available on the black market and in Oregon stores since the CBS news program "60 Minutes placed Dr Jacob and the "wonder drug" in the national spotlight "We re concerned that it can be a carrier of chemical impuri ties to the body an FDA official says Rep Les AuCoin.
