Curtis Crebar and former Teenage Mr Oregon Mark Delps, want to establish the bodybuilding sport or art, as some contestants call it, in an area extending from Salem to the California border All contestants at Saturday's cham pionships were amateurs, and some had never competed before Rosenberg , who gained 10 pounds in muscle after training for only six weeks, has been flexing in front of audiences for a only one year — a very successful year She placed second in the Pacific Coast bodybuilding contest and second in the Junior Ms national competition More experienced bodybuilders have trainers or coaches, says Mark Govanni, a 19-year-old who placed third in the Teenage Mr Oregon category Many contestants make up their own routines and "try to make it look fluid," he adds To prepare for the competition con testants 'pump up" their muscles by lifting weights or practicing poses Then they cover themselves with oil — a purely theatrical requirement When they ap pear on stage the oil makes their mus cles glisten and stand out How are bodies rated in this game? According to Crebar, judges, look at the quality of posing, body proportion and muscle definition The judges usually are promoters, gym owners or ex-bodybuilders, like four-time Mr Universe champion Bill Pearl, one of the judges Bodybuilders spend a great deal of time and effort preparing for competi tions.
